On this day in 2013, CTTC Christian Pike (USN) died in Germany as a result of combat related injuries sustained while conducting stability operations in the Maiwand District of Afghanistan three days prior. Chief Pike was a highly trained cryptologic specialist who provided critical intelligence on real-time enemy movements and actions. His efforts played a critical role in helping his unit achieve objectives and save lives. May you never be forgotten Chris! There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. It's hard to not sound like I am aggrandizing Chris, but the fact is that he was truly one of the best of us and we will be forever at an immeasurable loss without your presence. Thank you Diana Pike for the love and guidance that you gave Chris, that enabled him to become the brother that we all cherished, for his friendship, honesty, loyalty, and leadership. LLTB!

Great Mental Models post 28: Randomness My 6th deployment was in Afghanistan and we lost one of our best - Chris Pike. He was the only death on that deployment, although we did have an EOD operator lose his legs and one of my current friends lose an eye and part of his hand. Chris was a stellar TIO operator and though not a SEAL was very well respected among our Troop as technically and tactically proficient yet incredibly humble. We scrutinized the operation, our plans and his actions and nothing stood out as a huge mistake on his part or the part of the guys that planned the operation. It is frustrating when you can't find someone to blame, a cause or something you can correct - but that is the tricky thing about randomness. We humans are terrible at recognizing it. I know some of us still carry guilt from that deployment around, like a lot of our warriors do, but some things we cannot explain or understand. That is where faith comes in to play. Honored and humbled to have served alongside him and for the contribution he made in keeping the rest of the Team safe.
