Virtual reality is changing how we understand and care for loved ones living with Alzheimer’s. A study in Aging & Mental Health found that VR can help caregivers and others build empathy by offering a glimpse into the experiences of someone with dementia—something words alone can’t always convey. Tinker VR was created with this purpose in mind. Set in a grandparent’s workshop, our VR experience utilizes unscripted, interactive moments and meaningful objects to reflect the emotional journey of memory loss. Guided by a live actor, these experiences give loved ones and caregivers a chance to connect on a deeper level and better understand the challenges of Alzheimer’s. These changes don’t just affect the person diagnosed; they ripple out to loved ones, especially the families and caregivers who walk alongside them each day. With Tinker VR, we set out to honor the strength in these stories. My grandfather's journey inspired us to create a space where families navigating Alzheimer’s feel seen and understood... and today, in this brief clip, my grandmother, Jen, shares what it was like to support him through his journey with Alzheimer's.
