Thanks and congratulations to our colleagues and friends at Seattle International Foundation who pulled off the biggest and best Central American Donors Forum yet! Each year, CADF brings together leaders from across countries and sectors, puts critical topics on the agenda, and creates space for serendipitous encounters that make new partnerships possible.
Thank you for making the 2024 Central America Donors Forum possible! #CADF2024 brought together over 1,000 leaders in Antigua Guatemala working towards development, human rights, education, climate justice, diversity, equity, independent journalism, democracy, and many other important issues in Central America. At SIF, we are honored to contribute to this unique space where each year we build and strengthen #TranformationalPartnerships in the region. ?? The will to respond to disasters is not sufficient. Inspiring community-led organizations FUNDICCEP, MOPAWI, and Asociacion Agroforestal Brisas del Lago, have focused on preparation and resilience through strategic partnerships, including the Partnership for Disaster Recovery and Resilience (PDRR), a co-funding alliance led by the Inter-American Foundation in partnership with the Climate and Land Use Alliance, Ford Foundation, International Community Foundation, Tinker Foundation, The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI) and individual philanthropists. Through small grants, the Partnership supports strong civil society organizations that build community resilience, mitigate the impacts of extreme weather and climate, and strengthen economic, civic, and social ties among community members. The Partnership also promotes capacity building, knowledge exchanges, and peer-to-peer learning among organizations experienced in recovering from and preparing for natural disasters. #CADF2024 #Resilience #Disasters

My #CADF24 highlight so far: joining an incredible set of of panelists to share the origin story and initial learning from our shared initiative "Voces para la Educación". We heard how Voces has created a platform for civil society organizations to share their expertise and evidence with the Ministry of Education, forging new opportunities for advocacy and cross-sector collaboration. Andrea Coché Mendoza of MAIA Impact recounted challenges navigating the public sector under previous administrations, and described how Voces helps organizations come together to engage education officials more effectively. Travis Ning of Ward Family Foundation emphasized that the best role for philanthropy (in this case Ward, Luis von Ahn Foundation, and Tinker Foundation) isn't driving this kind of process, but instead offering space and support for civil society organizations to take the lead. ángel del Valle of Population Council Guatemala walked through the innovative Voces methodology that he and his team have developed to bring together diverse education actors around common priorities. And we were honored to be joined by Vice Minister of Education Dr. Carlos Aldana Mendoza MINEDUC - Ministerio de Educación - Guatemala, who embodies his administration's openness to engagement with civil society and desire to move from dialogue to joint action. Big appreciation to Voces colleagues who weren't on the stage, but who have been involved throughout the process: José Emilio López Julianne Carlson Evelyn Roquel Aiken Chew Rob Jentsch. And most of all to the organizations that form part of Voces, all active in the Guatemalan Altiplano (logos below). They share a commitment to educational equity and a willingness to embrace new ways of working at a moment of real potential. May their voices be heard!

On the sidelines of #CADF the partners and funders of the RECARGA initiative shared a laughter-filled meet-up despite the early hour. RECARGA launched two years ago to address the impacts of the pandemic on education in Guatemala and Honduras. Through the initiative 15 frontline organizations receive flexible funding, opportunities for institutional strengthening based on their own priorities, and the chance to network and collaborate with peers. Our breakfast on Tuesday focused on building deeper connections between organizations and donors, rather than formal report-outs. That said, two years into the initiative we heard some exciting updates: ? Organizations using flexible funding to expand programming and double down on what’s working. This is critical as students find their footing and recover lost learning post pandemic. ? Use of RECARGA collaboration funds for learning exchanges between organizations with similar goals and challenges. ? Growing capacity for impact measurement and storytelling that positions organizations to engage local education officials and access new funding. (More on that in the comment below.) Beyond all these initial outcomes, it was clear what a vibrant and caring community these organizations have created for themselves. When we (Kathy Hall, Kimberly McClain) first developed the concept for RECARGA at the height of the pandemic we were motivated to support the organizations that seemed to be doing the most with the least. Many were working around the clock to keep children to connected to learning, with limited external support and in relative isolation. It was a hard, frustrating time for community leaders who had devoted their lives to education and children’s wellbeing. Two years later many challenges remain - but this is the right group of organizations to take them on. Special thanks to Marta Xicay Gomez for her masterful facilitation and to our friends at Seattle International Foundation for the space and breakfast! ?
