RIP to Joe Quesenberry; My Toughest Critic, Turned Mentor I met Joe on one of my first sales calls ever in my career. Bright eyed and bushy tailed, I walked into the K-Bro Shorncliffe plant. Fresh off a six-month training gauntlet, learning everything there was to know about ironers, I was ready to unleash my knowledge on my new customer base – selling ironer supplies, providing expert level installation services, and assisting with production related issues. Let’s just say, I was quickly humbled when my first interaction was with a guy with the email address ‘[email protected]’.? I asked around and got the lowdown on my new friend, Joe. His laundry resume was impressive to say the least, and my CV paled in comparison – I was the new kid on the block, tasked with doing what Joe had done for longer than I had been alive. I tried to school Joe on linen pH, roll graduation and ironer throughput, among other things. He politely and calmly poked holes in my theories.? Joe gave me opportunities but certainly made me work for them. He held me accountable for results I had proposed I could achieve. He knew when I was making mistakes, but allowed me to make them, and then helped me work through them. I learned that I couldn’t out-iron the ironerguy. Rather than try to wow him, I asked if he could teach me what he knew. My sales call visits transitioned to educational sessions. Here is an email I sent in 2014 after a visit with him: Hi Joe, Thanks for your time last week - I always appreciate spending time with you and getting to listen to your stories, I pick up something new every time we get a chance to talk. Thanks again for all your wisdom.?Attached below is the Jensen belting that we talked about. Let me know your thoughts on it.?Thanks again and we will talk soon! I’m not sure what he saw in me, but he took me under his wing and taught me everything (likely only a portion!) he knew. I’ll forever be grateful to Joe for what he has done for my career – and I only met him on the back nine of his. I’m sure there are countless others that have similar stories from before I even got started in the laundry industry.? Years down the line, we continued to stay in touch, though the time between visits grew. When we sat down, we would pick right back up from where we were last time. He would bring me different things – belt pullers he designed, a vintage roll size measuring tool and a handmade pen set (something he picked up to ‘get out of the house’ in his retirement years). Joe’s son-in-law called me this morning to let me know that he had passed away, only hours after it had happened. I’m honoured I was informed so quickly – I hope that means he felt as strongly about me as I did him. Maybe I taught him something after all, although I doubt it was ironer or even laundry related.??
