Last month, our team had the incredible opportunity to support and attend the Videostroboscopy and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) course at USF. The USF course brought together SLPs throughout the United States. This provided a great opportunity to connect with SLPs working in acute care and ENT clinics. The first day of the course focused on videostroboscopy, featuring presentations from USF outpatient clinic SLPs and otolaryngologists. A key takeaway was the expectation for reports to include clear documentation and images. Day two focused on FEES, particularly the application of VASES, developed by Dr. Curtis. Discussions covered the development of FEES programs, best practices for reporting, and resources to streamline documentation—including reporting templates and EMR-integrated table creation tools. We extend our gratitude to the USF team for inviting us to participate in the conference, and to each of the SLPs we had the opportunity to collaborate with!

What does evidence-based practice (EBP) mean? EBP integrates clinical expertise, research evidence (both internal and external), and client/caregiver perspectives (ASHA, n.d.). This holistic approach enables healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality services and empower patients to make informed decisions (ASHA, n.d.). Moreover, EBP supports personalized, effective, and efficient care, reducing unsafe practices and enhancing dynamic treatment approaches (Cardosos et al., 2021; Youngblut & Brooten, 2001). Additionally, it can improve patient experiences, overall outcomes, and reduce healthcare costs (Melnyk et al., 2014). Despite research endorsing EBP's benefits, literature highlights implementation challenges such as support, data accessibility, healthcare staff knowledge, and clinical education (Cardoso et al., 2021; Pitsillidou et al., 2023). Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a gold-standard tool for identifying and analyzing dysphagia. It offers numerous advantages, including safety, portability, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to assess swallowing with preferred foods and liquids—all without radiation exposure. FEES also allows for secretion management assessment and has no time constraints (Dziewas et al., 2019; Langmore et al., 2021; Nacci et al., 2008; Prikladnicki et al., 2022). Research demonstrates that FEES is sensitive, predictive, and highly practical, serving as both a diagnostic and treatment tool (Pisegna, 2022). It has been associated with improved functional outcomes, reduced pneumonia and mortality rates, and even shorter hospital stays (Braun et al., 2019; Coscarelli et al., 2007; Sharaf et al., 2023). Additionally, FEES is valuable in therapy, providing real-time visual biofeedback to enhance treatment (Kim et al., 2023).
