A lot of folks have reached out regarding lodging during United Nations COP30 in Belem, Brazil, so I'll go ahead and share my sentiments here in hopes that it provides some value to the climate community. I spent a week in Belem last month and was shocked by the prices. I was quoted $96,000 USD to rent a 4 bedroom apartment for two weeks. A couple of things that I will share: - Belem is a city of 1,300,000 - The Blue Zone and Green Zone neighbor another city called Ananindeua of 500,000 - There are a reported 20,000 hotel rooms in Belem with double occupancy capacity - The organizers are planning to bring in cruise ships which will increase beds by up to 4,500 - They are building new accommodations to add a reported total of 26,000 beds - It's worth noting that Belem hosts?Círio de Nazaré each year which brings 2,000,000 people to the city. Then you have 1,300,000 people and their residences, tens of thousands of which are eager to cash in and will rent on Airbnb. From my conversations on the ground, the people of Belem have been told (and widely believe) that hundreds of thousands of the world's wealthiest business leaders are coming to their city and they feel this is a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to cash in. Belem is considered a poor city that has been left behind in economic development. You can't blame the people for wanting to capitalize. My personal opinion is that there are more than enough beds in Belem and there will be a market adjustment.?I am waiting to book once the market adjusts, as I anticipate there will be an inventory dump. I recognize that not everyone may feel comfortable in taking that approach. Happy to hear others' thoughts. #COP30 #Belem - Time for Better

If, like me, you’re feeling heartbroken, shocked and angry by the devastation of the LA fires, I hope you are taking care of yourself but I also hope that this can serve as an opportunity to inspire action. For too long, the world has sat by watching oil and gas executives extract billions of dollars out of the Earth while the planet and people pay the consequences. The fossil fuel industry wants us to be complacent, they want us to blame each other and ourselves while tax payer dollars pump trillions into subsidizing oil and gas while holding back the transition to clean energy. If you’re angry, then direct that anger towards action. Here’s a few things we can all do to drive systemic change and be apart of co-creating a better world. ? Elect officials that are going to prioritize the environment and aren’t being bought by oil and gas ? Advocate and vote for policy change ? Hold corporations accountable ? Divest - bank with a credit union or one of the few financial institutions that aren’t investing in the destruction of the planet ? Demand your local officials implement sustainable infrastructure and green transportation ? Be aware of international climate agreements and lean into politics during these high stakes moments ? Divest your retirement account - this takes about 5 minutes ? Support Climate Activists, Land Defenders, Non-Profits working on climate action ? Pay attention, use your voice, start conversations If you’re inspired to get involved and would like some resources or ideas beyond these tips, feel free to reach out. Everyone is welcome in the movement to create a better world. ?? ???? Time for Better #climateaction

Years a go I made the decision to focus on Climate Change Communications. I remembered that the moment that happened was when I was doing an ideation session for the UN SDG's and our focus was to create a systems map and suddenly at the center there it was SDG13: Climate Action. It has been quite a journey to focus on climate communications since by many is not perceived as a pilar of climate action but our intention is to change that beginning with the climate change community and then out into the world educating next generations and focusing on pushing new narratives and inspiring the craft of many amazing storytellers, strategist and creatives. As we approach so many changes ahead, in all levels of being, we believe that is time to make an effort to push policy, and specially Governments to step up into their commitments to the #ParisAgreement chapter 6 and 12th : Literacy to the public! we can unleash and accelerate not just the agreements on climate but the #Sustainable Development Goals. Is all so connected, as I always say: Is not Climate Change, Is the everything Change ( Margaret Atwood). In this new report, Pop: culture: I am specially excited about new ways of approaching a new era of climate communications through the 8 dimensions of wellbeing. The latest US election has thought us so much on an very fast changing field...and this might be an exciting opportunity to explore new ways to inspire, re-imagine and catalyze the best of the human spirit. Thank you to the team at New Zero World for compiling this piece of work and to the amazing support of the institutions like the H&M Foundation for trusting us with this work. Today, the Biden Administration unveiled a historic update to the U.S. Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, setting an ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 61-66% from 2005 levels by 2035. This announcement builds on the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, leveraging landmark investments, federal standards, and partnerships across local, state, Tribal, and private sectors. With this updated target, the U.S. remains on track to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, focusing on the outcome of good-paying union jobs, reducing costs for Americans, and securing the U.S. position as a global climate leader. During a recent climate briefing with The White House, Ali Zaidi, John Podesta, and Sue Biniaz emphasized that this bold vision is achievable through rapid clean energy deployment, industrial innovation, and inclusive policies that uplift communities. The path to 2035 presents an ambitious and achievable climate commitment—one that will require all of us to innovate, collaborate, and push for solutions that benefit both people and the planet. Recent research on climate communication shows how the emotional tone of a message, whether fear-based or hope-driven, interacts with how soon we perceive the threat or solution. Fear combined with short-term urgency tends to prompt immediate recognition of the problem, while hope shines when paired with long-term, goal-oriented messaging. For leaders navigating the intersection of business, policy, and sustainability, understanding these dynamics is critical to fostering meaningful engagement. But there’s more to the story. Messages that evoke hope can help overcome the fatigue often associated with the climate crisis, promoting a sense of agency and optimism. Meanwhile, well-crafted fear-based appeals can catalyze action while providing clear paths forward. For organizations aiming to lead purposefully, aligning communication strategies with these insights can help galvanize teams, customers, and stakeholders toward a better future. Thinking about bringing up climate change at the holiday table? It might sound daunting, but trust us: it’s doable—and essential. The holidays are a chance to connect, even when conversations turn to tough topics like climate change. At Time for Better, we’ve seen how thoughtful communication can create breakthroughs. An insightful article by the Environmental Defense Fund offers three practical tips for having respectful and productive conversations: Ask questions, don’t argue: During the Nuclear Matters activation at Hope House, we saw how thoughtful questions facilitated open conversations about clean energy. Start by asking, “Have you noticed how much buzz there is about nuclear energy lately?” to engage without creating conflict. Share positive solutions: At Earth Disco, we showcased Seventh Generation’s work on climate solutions, blending it with inspiring performances from Hila the Earth, DJ Eric Terena, Madame Gandhi, and Pattie Gonia. Sharing hopeful, solution-oriented stories like these shifts conversations toward what’s possible. Focus on shared experiences: Our recent #WomenLeadingonClimate campaign highlighted personal stories that showed how shared experiences can unite and motivate action. Finding common ground builds bridges, whether it’s your love for cooking, hiking, clean air, or supporting local communities. Now more than ever, we stand united, calling on all leaders to step up. Time for Better was proud to collaborate with Catherine McKenna (former Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Canada, CEO of Climate and Nature Solutions, and Founder of Women Leading on Climate) to strategize a powerful social media campaign that reached millions. Women and girls often face systemic barriers, from limited access to education to unequal work opportunities. Yet, they are 2.5x more likely to engage in climate issues. Women are not just participants; they are champions of change. As COP29 continues, we’re calling on our global community to amplify women's voices and advocate for decisions prioritizing people and the planet. Together, we can create meaningful change. #WomenLeadingonClimate ____________________ At Time for Better, we call on leaders to recognize the importance of coming together to create a bright future for all. When nuclear reactors are shut down, most remain dormant, but the tide is changing. Constellation Energy is now working to restart one of the reactors at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island—once the site of the U.S.’s most infamous nuclear accident in 1979. With climate change driving demand for low-carbon energy alternatives, nuclear energy is being reconsidered as part of the solution. Nuclear currently provides about 19% of U.S. energy, with the potential to expand if successful models emerge. Based on Microsoft's commitment to purchase its energy, Constellation’s plan to bring this reactor back online by 2028 will test if reactivating older reactors can be done within budget and on schedule. Microsoft’s agreement highlights how significant corporations can lead the way in supporting clean energy initiatives as they work toward decarbonization. As we strive to meet ambitious carbon-reduction goals, exploring a mix of energy sources—including nuclear—may prove essential in the fight against climate change. ____________________ At Time for Better, we know creating a bright future will require ingenuity and new sources of energy to create the future we want. As the climate clock ticks closer to crisis, COP29 in Baku must serve as a pivotal moment to close the emissions gap and realign global efforts with the 1.5°C goal. The latest UNEP report warns that annual greenhouse gas emissions remain alarmingly high, risking a dangerous temperature rise that could exceed 3°C without immediate, coordinated action. With this "climate crunch time" upon us, achieving the necessary 42% emissions reduction by 2030 requires a united global response. Strategic communication can play a transformative role in mobilizing this response. By effectively communicating climate urgency and outlining actionable pathways, we can rally diverse sectors, engage the public, and empower policymakers to commit to and act on ambitious climate targets.? ____________________ As COP29 draws near, let’s harness the power of communication to bridge the emissions gap and build a future where progress aligns with climate goals.
