The U.S. Elections and the Yield Curve: Our Take on the Shift ?? The recent U.S. elections had significant repercussions in the financial markets. At Tiempo Capital, we anticipated a substantial inversion in the 10-year to 2-year Treasury yield curve and aligned our strategy accordingly. Our forecast rested on three core factors: 1?) Yield Curve Normalization: With one of the longest yield inversions in history, a return to normalcy seemed due. 2?) Fiscal Policy: Both Trump and Harris have shown support for Expansionary Fiscal Policy, which we expect to weigh on bond markets. 3?) Investor Sentiment: Bond investors, especially the so called “Bond Vigilantes”, increasingly uneasy with inflation trends, were likely to offload long-term Treasuries to express dissatisfaction with fiscal expansion. The result? We expected election outcomes—especially a Trump win—to spur higher selling of long-term bonds, driving yields up. Meanwhile, 2-year Treasuries were poised to remain anchored as the Fed preps for potential rate cuts. The post-election data matched our analysis, with 10-year Treasury yields (red line) spiking 3.4% from the day before the election, compared to a smaller 2.6% rise in 2-year Treasuries (blue line). The yield curve inversion shifted by 31.9%, reflecting these trends. At Tiempo, deep macro analysis like this informs every step we take to navigate market changes.
