Since the early 70s and until 1989 my father fought fires and performed agricultural flying with a Thrush Commander, powered by the legendary Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp, a 9-cylinder radial engine. I’ll never forget the sound of that engine! The plane carried 400 US gallons of water and was a big success, with over 1,300 built by Rockwell and more than 350 by Ayres. Now, 50 years later, sometimes I get to fly the evolution of that same aircraft. The one in the picture is the one I'm flying today. It is a dual-seater Thrush 710, which we use a lot to train new aerial firefighters. It has twice the power, thanks to a PT6-65AG engine, and carries double the water my dad’s plane did. This model has a few modifications, including a custom-designed and approved fire gate that increases its capacity to 740 US gallons (2,800 liters). It’s incredible to think how this design has stayed over the years. From my father’s flights to mine, the Thrush has played a role not just in the fight against wildfires, but mostly in feeding the world. This aircraft has helped farmers protect and nourish their crops for decades, supporting global food production. #aerialfirefighting #pilotlife #aviation Thrush Aircraft, LLC
