Hello #thrivingfriends Meet the incredible young woman who runs an orphanage and fosters over 30 children. Tusaiwe YANA is the founder of non-profit organizations "Empowering Young Mothers" and "You Are Not Alone" (YANA), offering help and support to vulnerable people across Malawi. Munkhondya got pregnant when she was 16 and is a single parent to son Jeromy. After a couple of tough years, she was kicked out of her home at age 18, which inspired her to start "Empowering Young Mothers". Empowering Young Mothers currently cares for 33 children, aged between just 6 months old and 17. Each child has a different story. Some have been abandoned, many are orphaned and others were street children with no family or home at all. Munkhondya calls her orphanage "a home" to ensure that her children do not grow up with the negative stigma associated with life in care. Her second organization YANA, was founded in May 2021 and supports nearly 300 vulnerable people in Malawi with a special needs school, two preschools, a vocational school for women, and two support groups for the elderly. Munkhondya was abandoned by her mum at 9 months old before being taken in by her grandparents, who now suffers from PTSD. She started YANA to give other abandoned children the love and support she wished she had received. Hello #thrivingfriends Meet Neo Hutiri, founder and managing director of Technovera Pty Ltd, a social impact startup focused on using technology to improve access to chronic medication in Africa. In 2014, Neo was diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB). At a point he got tired of spending hours in line every time he picked up medicine at a healthcare facility. So, he invented Pelebox Smart Lockers, a digital platform that manages internet-enabled smart lockers, which allows patients to quickly collect their repeat chronic medication instead of queuing for hours at public clinics. His invention has cut wait times from 3 hours to 36 seconds and offer patients more privacy in areas where healthcare facilities are scarce. Neo Hutiri’s innovation doesn’t just save time, it protects privacy for people with stigmatized conditions. Hutiri has set up over 123 lockers across South Africa and has also exported the lockers to Botswana and Namibia. In 2019, he was awarded £50,000 ($63,000) by the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering, as well as a medal, which was presented by King Charles III’s sister Princess Anne during a ceremony in London. It is Neo's dream to see Pelebox operating across countries in Africa and to continue reaching and creating value for patients who are spending hours and hours in clinics. Keep thriving?Neo??
