Hello #thrivingfriends Meet Richard Turere, a young Kenyan innovator, who developed the "Lion Lights," a revolutionary wildlife conservation technology that uses flashing LED lights to protect livestock from lion attacks. This smart farming solution helps rural farmers safeguard their animals while promoting sustainable agriculture and reducing human-wildlife conflict. At just 11 years old, Turere noticed that lions feared moving lights so he began experimenting with different electrical appliances to create an LED flashing light system that deters lions from approaching and attacking animal enclosures. The invention was originally an indicator box that could only turn lights on and off, so Turere continued to refine it by programming unique light sequences to prevent lions from learning the patterns. The system primarily uses solar energy and can be combined with wind energy for cloudy conditions. It successfully scares lions away from livestock by placing the lights about 15 meters apart around an animal enclosure and using them to mimic human movement. His groundbreaking idea gained global recognition, and in 2013, he delivered an inspiring TED Talk about his innovation. Today, Lion Lights are widely used, advancing environmentally friendly farming, wildlife protection, and community-driven conservation efforts. Hello #thrivingfriends, Meet William Kamkwamba, popularly known as "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind". When William was 15, he built a windmill out of scrap materials and bicycle parts that provided power to his farmland home in Malawi. Kamkwamba then expanded his windmills to pump water and start irrigating the crops that had suffered from a drought that hit his village at the time. which led him to drop out of school due to financial hardship. However, Kamkwamba continued his studies independently, borrowing books from a small library in his village. One of the books, an American textbook titled "Using Energy," inspired him to build a windmill that could power his family’s home. This remarkable achievement not only powered his family's appliances but also brought hope to his village. His story gained international attention, leading to opportunities for further education and the co-authoring of his memoir, "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," published in 2009. The book has been translated into multiple languages and was adapted into a film in 2019. News of Kamkwamba’s success spread, first appearing in The Daily Times, a newspaper in Malawi, and then in newspapers and on websites all over the world. Kamkwamba is the co-founder of the Moving Windmills Project, an organization that works with residents of the Masitala area on such projects as drilling wells for clean water and installing solar panels at schools and community centers to provide consistent electricity. The organization also works with young Malawians to create simple solutions to everyday farming challenges. Hello #thrivingfriends Meet the incredible young woman who runs an orphanage and fosters over 30 children. Tusaiwe YANA is the founder of non-profit organizations "Empowering Young Mothers" and "You Are Not Alone" (YANA), offering help and support to vulnerable people across Malawi. Munkhondya got pregnant when she was 16 and is a single parent to son Jeromy. After a couple of tough years, she was kicked out of her home at age 18, which inspired her to start "Empowering Young Mothers". Empowering Young Mothers currently cares for 33 children, aged between just 6 months old and 17. Each child has a different story. Some have been abandoned, many are orphaned and others were street children with no family or home at all. Munkhondya calls her orphanage "a home" to ensure that her children do not grow up with the negative stigma associated with life in care. Her second organization YANA, was founded in May 2021 and supports nearly 300 vulnerable people in Malawi with a special needs school, two preschools, a vocational school for women, and two support groups for the elderly. Munkhondya was abandoned by her mum at 9 months old before being taken in by her grandparents, who now suffers from PTSD. She started YANA to give other abandoned children the love and support she wished she had received.
