This week, Anthony and Steve had the incredible opportunity to attend the Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART) Convention in Miami focused on the power of repurposing, upcycling, and sustainable practices within the thrift industry. The discussions were not only eye-opening but essential for Thrift World’s shared goal with the industry: promoting responsible reuse and reducing waste worldwide. Representatives from across the globe shared insights on regulatory efforts, the importance of sorting high-quality products and fighting disinformation about the impact of secondhand exports. A notable moment came from a representative from Ghana, who presented aerial photos debunking widespread misinformation about “waste dumping” in their country. It’s a stark reminder of the integrity and transparency needed in our industry to honor the global communities we serve. After insightful conversations, countless new contacts, and a strong Nebraska-Iowa-Missouri presence, we’re excited to bring back fresh perspectives and renewed purpose to Thrift World’s mission. From a Hot Mess to a Thriving Online Store A Note from Steve, Our Founder "When we launched Thrift World’s e-commerce during the chaos of COVID, I thought I was going to go broke. So I did what anyone would do—I tried to sell what we had online by myself. Spoiler alert: It was a hot mess. But hey, you’ve got to start somewhere, right? Fast forward, and we got smarter. We linked up with eBay, Facebook, and Instagram, and built our own Shopify site. Suddenly, we were reaching a bigger audience—turns out, there's more to online sales than just winging it. Eventually, I realized running this thing solo was… less than ideal. So we brought in a stellar team (genius, I know). In the last year, we even partnered with some brilliant software folks to kick things up a notch. Oh, and in 2023, we went full techy and got ourselves a Niton X-ray machine—like the ones pawn shops use—to test gold and silver purity. Yep, things got fancy. Now? Our e-commerce is growing at 100% year over year - and we're really proud of that. And let’s be real—this isn't just about finding killer deals.
