Hope is in community ?? Last week, our Thousand Current community gathered in the Bay Area to connect, reflect, and envision our connected futures together. We were honored to be in conversation with Nonhle Mbuthuma, founder of the Amadiba Crisis Committee (ACC) and Goldman Environmental Prize winner who has been at the forefront of protecting South Africa’s Wild Coast from destructive oil drilling –just one example of how our movement partners are healing ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, and improving livelihoods. Nonhle reminded us that “Hope is in community. When we felt like losing hope, it was the community members who gave us hope. Community commitment has always given us strength.” We’re so grateful to our community– Nonhle, our movement partners, our supporters, and all the grassroots movements around the world who are creating the futures we need. As Nonhle said: “If we win, it means that the planet has won.” What gives you hope? Let us know in the comments ??

On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake hit southern Türkiye and northern Syria, killing over 50,000 people and collapsing more than 100,000 buildings. In times of crisis, local communities are always the first to act, providing immediate aid, essential needs, and emotional and social support. From wildfires to flood responses, we have seen how local communities and grassroots organizations step up — not just as first responders but also for long-term recovery, and we will keep seeing it as climate disasters intensify. In Türkiye, our movement partner World March of Women Association of Asia (WMW) and allied organizations reacted immediately after the earthquake, and have been leading rebuilding and recovery in the two years since. From collective gardens to laundry cooperatives and mental health centers, WMW has shown the world that true recovery isn’t about returning to the past — it’s about building something better, and building it together. For generations, Indigenous women across Latin America have been leading the fight for climate justice. As Zenaida Yasacama shared with us, the main axis of solidarity for Indigenous people is the “Minga comunitaria”, which means supporting each other in community tasks, in family work and in every aspect of life. On International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating three of our powerful women-led movement partners. Meet Zenaida, the vice-president of CONAIE, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador. Since her youth, Zenaida has seen the essential role women leaders have played in the struggle for climate, economic and social justice. As she says, all struggles are connected and the only way to create lasting change is by acting together. Want to be part of this change? “No woman comes from a single issue struggle; all struggles are connected.” -Noelene Nabulivou, Executive Director of DIVA for Equality, Fiji As we approach International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating three of our powerful women-led movement partners. Today, we travel to Fiji to meet DIVA For Equality, an organization founded in 2011, after observing that LGBTQ+ women who played sports were often mistreated because of their sexual orientation. Now, DIVA’s expansive reach includes a 600-member network, initiatives to position women’s voices in decision making spaces across the Pacific, and a wide range of programs on economic inclusion and climate justice.
