In 2024, we mobilized unprecedented resources for movements advancing #FoodSovereignty, #ClimateJustice, and #EconomicJustice across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean. We aim to resource movements at the scale of their vision. This year, we increased the size of our annual grants; provided crisis funding; and supported a variety of tactics, from strategic litigation to cultural production to grassroots campaigns. Social movements do the essential work of calling out abuses of power, organizing against injustice , strengthening communities, and imagining better futures. Now more than ever, philanthropy can be an ally for movements by making sure they have the support they need to thrive, even in challenging political climates. Transformative change comes from social movements. Thousand Currents aims to learn from grassroots movement leaders, resource them, amplify their work, and collectively forge a path toward a just future. We know that the work of social movements takes time; that’s why our grantmaking approach centers long-term, trust-based, and movement-led relationships of at least 10 years. “Social movements worldwide remind us that democracy neither begins nor ends at the ballot box. It is about the right of people to make decisions over the everyday essentials that shape their lives – access to clean water, air, food, housing, and more. At the centre of these struggles are everyday people – farmers, peasants, Indigenous communities, women, and youth – who are working to dismantle oppressive systems and build new ones that meet their needs and dreams”. ? With the U.S. election results, we are reminded that people continue to resist, dream, and build in spite of governments. Thousand Currents remains committed to supporting our partners advancing systemic shifts in the climate, food, and economic spaces.
