Traditional funding practices can often turn social, intrinsic, and organic movements into time bound and restrictive projects that are disconnected from the realities of grassroots organizations. So, how can #philanthropy shift its funding practices? Our latest animation outlines the basic changes needed in funding practices for philanthropy to meet the true needs of grassroots movements and support meaningful, lasting change. What other practices would you add? We know the work doesn’t stop at the basics, so if you want to know more about Thousand Currents Partnership Model visit: https://lnkd.in/gNnKavvS

What’s the future of accumulated wealth, taxes and institutional philanthropy? Marlene Engelhorn, guest editor at Alliance magazine, talked with Rajiv Khanna, from Thousand Currents, and Yahya Alazrak, from Resource Generation to find out. Here are some highlights ?? -Wealth comes from land and labour, and since few places have fair labour practices we must question the origins of wealth, who generated it, who owns it and how it’s redistributed. -We need to dismantle the implication that wealth and virtue are synonymous. There are still foundations that decide what?s good for other people and call it ‘strategy’. -Philanthropy is changing. Institutions are assessing how and where their money is going, not just grants but also the endowments and investments. - “Philanthropy’s role is in creating conditions for movements and community-based organisations to enact the systems change agendas they have, not to bring about the change itself.” - Rajiv Khanna What do you think? A proposed law in Zambia would make it illegal for farmers to save and share seeds from their harvest, a fundamental practice for #FoodSovereignty. The law wants the country to adhere to UPOV regulations, which promote a one-size-fits-all approach to agriculture. Farmers around the world should be the ones to decide when, how, and what practices to use to grow their food. A group of grassroots farmers, including our movement partner Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa, is calling for international support to prevent this law and to stand up for their right to #FoodSovereignty. Add your voice! Sign their petition by September 9: https://lnkd.in/eu3HqYwv
