Joseph Murrey, Senior Advancement Officer at Thornwell, recently shared a beautiful reflection on the significance of LushAcres Farm, connecting it to the heart of Thornwell's mission. He wrote: "Many of you know that Thornwell has a farm called LushAcres. This piece of land has been one of the great blessings for our ministry over the last 150 years. We have worked hard to cultivate the hearts of children just as we have worked hard to cultivate the land and animals God has given us. Today, LushAcres continues to provide a beautiful picture of how God honors faithful stewardship of all that he has given us. Recently, we had several new baby goats join our ministry. These "kids" are precious but what is most amazing is watching them grow and flourish in a home that has all the things they need to THRIVE. They have food, water, security, and LushAcres is full of sunshine and room to grow. But, most importantly, they are constantly "learning the ropes" through playful engagement with their papa and mama goats. It is fascinating to watch them butt heads with their dads, lean into their mamas milk, and experience community in healthy ways. They are on their way to transforming from a "kid" to a full-grown adult. I hope you see the picture I am painting! How God has intended for the innocent to grow and thrive through nature and nurture. Yet, the children in foster care we are blessed to serve may have never experienced this GOD-given blessing. Your partnership with us through prayer, volunteerism, and financial support is helping our kids "learn the ropes!" But more importantly, we are helping to build healthy connections for them. These are connections of permanency rooted in Christ-centered nurturing where life feels less like a barren wasteland and more like the abundant, gently rolling fields at LushAcres Farm." Joseph's words powerfully highlight the growth, care, and nurturing that is at the heart of both the farm and the work we do to support children in foster care, creating an environment where they, too, can thrive and experience community.

This past Saturday, we had the incredible opportunity to gather for Everyone Can Do Something: A Night of Celebration with Jason Johnson. It was an evening filled with inspiration, connection, and a shared heart for vulnerable children and families. Foster and adoptive parents, ministry leaders, and those exploring their role in caring for children in need came together for worship, fellowship, and a powerful message from Jason Johnson. As a speaker, writer, and advocate, Jason shared wisdom and encouragement drawn from his journey in foster care and adoption, reminding us that everyone has a part to play in making a difference. The night concluded with coffee, dessert, and meaningful conversations as attendees reflected on how they can step into this vital work. To all who joined us—thank you! We started meeting 5 years ago via zoom and sharing our foster journey together. These ladies represent 294 children that have been cared for during our foster parent journeys across SC. "This ?? represents some of the fiercest, strongest, wildest advocates for children. Foster mamas inextricably tied together for life by a random covid zoom call that inspired almost 5 years of friendship and counting. At this table sat the caregivers of 2??9??4?? children - not counting the many of friends who were missing. Some of these children have been adopted and celebrated. Some were reunified with family and championed. Some are now independent and loved from afar. All are worthy of the care and the love and safety and homes they had. None are lucky to have us. We know that. It's not about us! The children are the heroes, they are the main character of the story. We are just so lucky to get to be written in to a few chapters. Foster care is scary. There is so much uncertainty and lack of control. There are myths and misconceptions about what it will be like to be a foster parent and this table of women will laugh until we cry telling stories about hard days. Foster care is hard and holy work. But the beauty is that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I promise that you can do this! You can pull up a seat at the table. We will welcome you in. In fact, we're saving you a seat and begging you to join us. Find yourself a community of friends who will walk with you and alongside you and sometimes ahead of you. Seek out diverse voices and opinions and experiences. These women in this picture love each other but we don't always agree. And that's GOOD. We share books and movies and podcasts and secret santa gifts and restaurant recommendations. We share resources and contact information. Because no one knows what they don't know. That's okay.
