The 297,000-square-foot building serves as an ongoing symbol of commitment to excellence in delivering advanced, cutting-edge research. In addition to its academic devotion, the Millennium Science Complex is committed to the environment and was certified LEED® Gold in 2013, due in part to the environmental benefits of the roof assembly. Hydrotech's Extensive Garden Roof® Assembly spans across ninety percent of the five-level, 60,000 SF roof and delivers energy conservation during extreme temperature, reduces all urban heat island effects, and manages stormwater runoff. Climate change continues to create challenges for municipalities and building developers who need to handle increasing amounts of stormwater. Denser developments, especially in urban areas, often have very limited space for the typical stormwater management techniques. More municipalities are requiring developers to detain larger volumes of water on their sites and to delay the entry of that water into the storm sewer systems. Rooftops are one of the last areas of the development site where highly effective stormwater management BMPs can be employed to deal with rainfall where it lands before it has a chance to immediately run down the drain.
