  • As part of Certified Nurses Day, we're spotlighting one of our incredible caregivers, Chelsea Coleman. Chelsea holds three certifications: CCRN (Critical Care Registered Nurse), CFRN (Certified Flight Registered Nurse) and MCCN (Mobile Critical Care Nurse). She pursued each certification with superior patient care in mind. Chelsea works in the Intensive Care Unit at Thomas Memorial Hospital, where her certifications equip her to go above and beyond for her patients. "My favorite part of the job is honestly the challenge. I like when I get a complex patient who I have to try to put pieces of the puzzle together to find out how to best help that patient. Getting to see them improve is that much more rewarding," Chelsea said. Ultimately family members are entrusting their loved ones' lives to me. I want to make sure I don’t let them down and at the end of every shift I can truthfully and confidently say I treated them to the best of my ability." Thank you, Chelsea, and all certified nurses at WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals, for demonstrating professionalism and dedication to quality patient care! Your credentials and commitment to excellence are recognized, trusted, and appreciated. ????????

  • When natural disasters strike, selfless individuals like our own Nick Miller, an Emergency Department Tech at Thomas Memorial Hospital, step up to provide relief. Nick has been involved in disaster response for nearly three decades and for the past five months, Nick has helped with disaster relief operations in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and more recently in southern West Virginia, performing search and rescue operations and delivering supplies to the hardest hit areas in the region. Nick and others have been working in coordination with groups including the National Mental Health Alliance to help those impacted by the devastating floods. Nick’s team has operated in 317 square miles covering seven western North Carolina counties and three eastern Tennessee counties. With many of the impacted areas inaccessible by vehicle, Nick’s team also brought in two pack mule teams to assist. Nick believes there is a strong connection to his career at Thomas Hospitals and his work in disaster relief. “As an Emergency Department Tech at Thomas, I have the opportunity to meet great people, both co-workers and patients that serve not only this community, but this entire region of West Virginia. From trauma patients to triage, each patient we meet is a special person that requires the greatest care that we can provide,” Nick said. “There is a strong correlation in the sense of urgency, planning, communication, and coordination in disaster operations as there is in an Emergency Department. The skills learned in disaster operations allow you to be more focused and confident in every task you perform.” Nick began his career as a firefighter-EMT in Charleston, South Carolina. He then advanced to the federal level, serving with the U.S. Department of State Emergency Services on a Disaster Medical Assistance Team deployed to disasters in 23 different countries. Nick then transferred to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a Planning Specialist with Incident Management Team and Public Assistance Specialist, serving across the continental U.S. and all territories. He was also a specialist with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Surge Capacity Force Region 3 Team. Nick and his fellow caregivers share a passion for helping others. Recently, Thomas Hospitals employees rallied to support residents impacted by floods in southern West Virginia. Caregivers donated cleaning supplies, diapers/wipes, non-perishable food items, socks/gloves, blankets, baby formula, and paper towels. Items were delivered to the Welch Armory. “I am so proud of the Thomas Hospitals team and for caregivers like Nick who go above and beyond to serve others in need,” Greg Rosencrance, M.D., president and CEO of Thomas Hospitals, said. “Nick’s leadership and dedication are inspiring, and we are lucky to have him on our team.”
