This past June everyone was wrapping up lunch and heading off in their different directions and Joy sat and spoke with me for an hour. An hour! She answered all my questions on leadership, team and culture and not only shared insights that I’m still writing about and pondering to this day - but she also shared with honesty - pain points, learning curves, ah ha moments, courageous decision making. Not long after I joined This Week Health, Bill Russell, Sarah Richardson, and the crew were talking about how to hit our crazy $50,000 goal for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Somebody in the group pointed at Bill’s yellow hat, and said, “Donate $500, get a yellow hat.” And I specifically remember the coughs and eyerolls in the room. But in our team’s spirit of “everything starts with a crappy first draft” — we decided to try it at the next #229Summit… We sold EVERY hat we had with us at that event. Bill flew home afterwards and had dozens of new hats made. Beth became Chief Mailbox Runner. Our partners decided to match EVERY donation. BTW, the hat guy is on retainer now. The “yellow-hat-club” was born from what could have been dismissed as a dumb idea. Turns out it was actually a pretty great “first draft”. Can’t wait to tell you what we’ve got planned for 2025.
