Asking questions during the fundraising process isn’t a sign of weakness. During yesterday’s panel, we explored the fundraising landscape and startup ecosystem with a focus on the unique obstacles women frequently encounter. A recurring theme was the issue of questions - or more precisely, the reluctance to ask them. Perhaps rooted in the pressure to be overly prepared before taking action or the fear of being perceived as underqualified, but it’s time to reframe this thinking: approaching fundraising as a two-way discovery process is empowering. A couple of areas you could inquire about to get you started - ?? Activity levels: not all funds are actively deploying capital, so it's important to determine if the person you're speaking with is in a position to take action if the deal is a fit. Asking about the timing of their last investment and where they are in their deployment cycle can provide valuable insight into their current priorities and constraints. ?? Expectations: Running a tight process begins with understanding the investment team's order of operations (aka next steps, stakeholders engaged in the process etc.) as well as metrics they are looking for. Explicitly asking is common practice and doesn't add friction to the discussion. Being inquisitive is powerful. Get after it, ladies! ??
