The most expensive mistakes any of us can make are in business and in love. But money is funny. It is hard to talk about money. Many of us grew up learning that talking about money is impolite, uncomfortable, or cringey. If you want to be great with money, you have to get comfortable talking about it. As Scott Galloway says: "You think Roger Federer never talks about tennis?" A few weeks ago, I had the chance to talk money, love, and tech (the best combo) with two brilliant women that have made it their mission to get more people talking about money – Kristen Kelly & Jennifer Saarbach, founders of The Wall Street Skinny. We had the chance to dig into a range of topics from building at First and why we are building a better prenuptial agreement process, to my jump from corporate tech leadership post-Google / Facebook / SoFi to founder life at First, and the important career and life lesson I learned after my Dad's sudden death last year. The “cognitive labor” of running a household — organizing schedules, anticipating everyone’s needs, and managing endless details — continues to fall primarily on women, even as traditional roles have shifted. The result? Burnout, resentment, and even, as Dr. Jelena Kecmanovic describes, broken relationships. ?? “If we had the knowledge, wisdom and patience to implement these approaches in my first marriage, that might have turned the tide,” she shares. “Instead, our relationship was another casualty of the gender inequality that... still ‘poisons the water we all drink.’” For couples preparing to enter marriage, it’s worth discussing not only financial terms in your prenup, but also how cognitive labor will be shared. A prenup can become an opportunity to set expectations for equitable division of financial assets, and of household responsibilities.
