Exciting news! I had the pleasure of joining This Week In Carbon alongside my incredible teammates, Rene Velasquez and Olaf Verweij, with the ever-brilliant Edward Smith as our host. This episode is a special one—we dive into the launch of crbn.trade, our motivations behind building it, and what our beta test means for the future of carbon markets. If you're curious about the story behind crbn.trade and the impact we're aiming to make, you won’t want to miss this one! ?? Listen to the full episode here: Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gQmVE_9f Apple Podcast: https://lnkd.in/gtRNUaJE YouTube: https://lnkd.in/g4k8_SpH P.S. - It was my first time on a podcast—let me know how I did (brutal roasts are welcome)! ??
It’s been a hectic past few days. Despite it all, Edward Smith and I hosted another episode of This Week In Carbon. Together we discuss the news stories shaping the carbon markets. As per the clip below, we discuss HSBC delaying its net zero target by 20 years. I call BS and articulate that this is an abject failure of leadership caged within the context of a lack of integrity around carbon markets and the inflexibility of The Science Based Targets initiative. Lets not conflate the two. Yes there is a lack of integrity but that sits squarely with HSBC’s leadership. It’s the lack of integrity to maintain their target. What sort of moral character is displayed to our future generations by quitting, just because it’s hard? Kicking the can down the road is not something we can afford given the finite carbon budget. In 2021, media outlets sensationalised the great injustice in “greenwashing”— companies making unsubstantiated claims around their climate targets through the use of offsets — I now wonder what we should call it when companies abandon their climate and net zero targets entirely or walk them back after it’s too late? Net Zero Negligence, Carbon Backsliding, Climate Surrender, are a few that come to mind. Bottom line, it’s weak and demonstrates a lack of leadership. But HSBC is not alone. Of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention another top story of the week crbn.trade — a platform we are building with the intention to democratise carbon markets — coming out is stealth-mode and our upcoming beta test. To discuss this, we were joined by our friends Akash Swamynathan and Olaf Verweij. Hope you enjoy the episode! If you can't tell, I'm having a lot of fun with Edward Smith talking to amazing people for This Week In Carbon podcast. This week, we have the dynamic duo of Nathalie Flores and Mónica De Oliveira join the pod. Two incredible women, who I am lucky to call my friends. It also just so happens that both Nat and Monica are best friends. On this episode, I coaxed Monica to join us and surprise Nat on the show. For those that don't know, Nathalie is a powerhouse, and draws on decades of experience in the worlds of climate policy; most notably as the Director for Climate Change in her home country of the Dominican Republic as well as most recently the Vice-Chair of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) at the UN Climate Change (UNFCCC) Meanwhile, Monica is a veteran of carbon markets having served in senior trading roles, and is one of the most insightful people I know. She's also very shy, which is why this is her first (but not last) podcast appearance. I'm delighted that she joined us! Hope you will too... Join us as we discuss the stories of the week, and given their combined expertise, get a masterclass on article 6 and the growth of carbon markets in LATAM. Hope you enjoy this week's show. We are excited to bring this and other future conversations with the market's thought leaders. If you have any recommendations for future guests please nominate them in the comments section below.
