Interesting insight from Jason Miller: Wisconsin, Iowa, and Pennsylvania are the states most impacted by the Port closure - likely due to exports of CASE IH, John Deere, and New Holland equipment. Mike Steenhoek and I discussed the implications for soy exports on this weekend's This Week In AgriBusiness
Outside of Maryland, what states are the most affected by the closure of the Port of Baltimore? To get an answer, I processed the 2017 Commodity Flow Survey to identify the state of origin for all shipments to the state of Maryland that are destined for export (yes, you can do that with CFS!). The chart below ranks those states based on the value of shipments. Thoughts: ? ? Wisconsin tops the list due to over $4.4 billion in transportation equipment exports (these are finished motor vehicles). ? ?Iowa is next due to $2.7 billion in machinery shipments (mostly John Deere farm equipment I'm guessing). ? ?Pennsylvania?is third due to mining (coal I'm guessing), wood product and lumber & construction wholesalers, and transportation equipment. The role of wood product manufacturing & construction wholesaler exports was a bit surprising. ? ?Exports for shipments that originate in Maryland are primarily machinery, computers & electronic products, and chemicals (possibly pharma?). ? ?West Virginia is coal shipments. ? ?Michigan is transportation equipment (motor vehicles).?? ? ?As a check for the reasonableness of my CFS calculations, I arrived at $15.5 billion in export shipments from this process. For 2017, Census Bureau's USA Trade Online shows $15.8 billion in domestic export value. I consider a 2% discrepancy phenomenal. ? Implication: I’m happy to share the underlying file I’ve assembled from CFS that provides these data broken out at a very granular level of detail, specifically origin state x destination state x origin NAICS x standard classification of transported good x export shipment status. Hopefully this analysis lets folks better identify which states outside of Maryland will feel this impact on the export side (especially Wisconsin and Iowa). ? #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #shipsandshipping #freight #logistics
