Introducing our new Industrial Innovation Cohorts startups! ?? Heavy industry accounts for 30% of global carbon emissions — over half from the cement, steel, and chemicals sectors. Essential for modern life, they literally form the building blocks of our society. ??? However, without innovation, they could become the largest source of emissions in just a decade. ?? Third Derivative welcomes 31 outstanding companies to the inaugural Industrial Innovation Cohorts, designed specifically to support startups decarbonizing these industries. Explore our new portfolio companies and learn how they are solving critical innovation gaps: https://lnkd.in/grgbRmn5 #IndustrialInnovation #Decarbonization #Innovation #Entrepreneurship

It was a pleasure to host, alongside Investors for Climate, a gathering in NYC to discuss the challenges and opportunities of scaling #industrialdecarbonization! Supporting early-stage technologies requires more than capital—it needs a strong ecosystem to de-risk and help innovations to become profitable and scalable. At RMI, we bridge gaps across all “valleys of death,” ensuring a clear path to commercial success. At Third Derivative, we focus on the early-stages of that journey, helping founders access capital, opportunities, and critical market insights. A big thank you to Hannah M. Lewis (Ardent), Perry Bakas (Oxylus Energy), Romy M. Fain (Heat Inverse) and Ryan Goethals and team (Metal Light Inc.) for joining us! Always inspiring to catch up with you and hear about your journeys and plans for the future. Over half of our latest cohort (which we kicked off yesterday!) is focused on #industrialinnovation —check out more about them here! https://lnkd.in/eYJizmne

What’s the coolest technology around? We may have the answer. ?? As the world warms, finding innovative solutions to balance comfort with emissions reduction has never been more urgent. Enter solid-state cooling — a new class of technology that: ?? Eliminates harmful refrigerants ? Boosts energy efficiency ? Offers benefits like precise temperature control and fewer moving parts This exciting approach relies on the caloric effect, where a solid material can change temperature by applying an external force or field like magnets, stretching, voltage, or pressure. mimic systems and MAGNOTHERM are two Third Derivative portfolio companies making strides in this space. ?? Exciting news! TS Conductor , a Third Derivative portfolio company, is opening its second US factory in Jasper County, South Carolina, creating hundreds of new jobs and representing millions of dollars of investment into the community. This will help meet the growing demand for their innovative product — an advanced conductor technology that enables utilities to double or triple transmission capacity, which means more energy for all! Can’t wait to see what’s in store for this incredible team as they begin production later this year. We’ll continue to keep you in the loop on their progress. #ClimateInnovation #Entrepreneurship #Community
Founder & CEO of TS Conductor: award-winning, high-performance conductors made in America to modernize the world’s power grids.
We are excited to announce TS Conductor’s second US manufacturing facility, which will begin production later this year! The new facility, located in Jasper County, South Carolina, will be a force multiplier for expanding transmission capacity and modernizing the grid in the US and beyond. Strategically located near the Port of Savannah, we will be more equipped than ever to deliver our advanced conductors to utilities and grids around the world, in addition to strengthening our supply chain here in the US. With rapid increases in electricity demand now and well into the future, it couldn’t be a better time to expand manufacturing of our advanced conductors, capable of delivering 2-3x the capacity of ACSR conductors. We are incredibly grateful to our investors, who have helped make this expansion possible:?Blue Earth Capital AG, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Energy & Environment Investment, Edison International, Gates Frontier, National Grid Partners, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, Quanta Services, Inc., and Wellington Management. I’d also like to thank the South Carolina Governor's Office, Henry McMaster, who joined us at today’s celebratory announcement event and who has welcomed our business into the state with open arms. Your support means so much to the TS team. Finally, I’d like to thank Craig Dannegger and the rest of the team at Clarius Partners, LLC, who have helped us find a location to plant roots in South Carolina. This expansion will create hundreds of new jobs in and around Jasper County, and we look forward to working with the SouthernCarolina Regional Development Alliance and the Hardeeville Career Advancement & Workforce Training Program to make investments in local workforce development to support these advanced manufacturing jobs. ?? As industries like long-distance trucking, shipping, and steel production work to reduce emissions, clean hydrogen — or hydrogen produced without releasing carbon dioxide — presents a possible solution. Some clean hydrogen is created through methane pyrolysis rather than water electrolysis, resulting in solid carbon which can be turned into other useful products. ? Third Derivative’s Research & Diligence Senior Associate, Raivat Singhania, spoke to this challenge in a recent Canary Media Inc. article. “Thermodynamically, it’s far more energy-favorable to split methane than to split water…Not only does methane-splitting require less energy, it can be done with a simpler plant design than water electrolysis, using fewer moving parts or fragile pieces of equipment.” ?? Third Derivative portfolio company, Aurora Hydrogen, is already making waves in this space through microwave energy. ??
