This evening, Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) has included the now-infamous Mary Miller Amendment in the text of his subcommittee’s FY 25 Agriculture/FDA appropriations bill – legislation passed every year to fund farm programs. Now two bills that pend in Congress (the other, of course, is the House 2024 Farm Bill) include this hemp-killing language. Urge Congress to vote against this using our Federal Action Center today: https://lnkd.in/gdk2Pz7N

The attack on hemp is an attack on economic liberty. No rational businessperson invests and builds a business that they believe is based on a "loophole." That is a bad long term business plan. Loopholes exist when laws are ambiguous. Words explicitly mentioned in statute like "acids, isomers, extracts, derivatives, cannabinoids"... are not ambigous. This is Congress we are talking about. Hemp businesses read the law, and built a $28B industry... You would think that this progress would be celebrated by the entire cannabis ecosystem... but instead we have prohibitionists and protectionists locking arms to drag the plant backwards and crush thousands of small businesses. Those of us stripped of our livelihoods by conglomerate greed and legislative overreach are more than a little frustrated—we're out for justice. We've endured endless "reefer madness" scare tactics from failing cannabis giants desperate to perpetuate a climate of fear and suspicion. This fear mongering fuels ridiculously overbearing regulations that choke the life out of small cannabis operators. Let's be clear: if the hemp saga has illustrated anything, it's that the sky does not fall when cannabis is regulated sensibly. Cannabis has been federally legal for over five years—look around, no apocalypse yet. Just simply standardize testing, packaging, labeling, and age gating and let the free market determine winners and losers like we do with other agricultural products. The real threat we pose? It's not just to the bottom lines of these bloated over-leveraged corporate entities who are running out of other people's money to spend; we challenge the very foundation of their failing system. We've shown that the free market—not monopolistic strongholds—is the key to genuine social and economic equity and essential reforms. It’s the only way to rectify the harms of past criminalization and to stop the cycle of arrests in the illicit market. When there is no longer a monopoly to protect, and equitable market access drives down prices and crushes the need for an illicit market, we would see an end to cannabis related arrests. If we let hemp dismantle these monopolies, we might just see an end to people being jailed for cannabis. The message is simple: free the plant, full stop. Anything less is a disservice to us all.

  • Better to not have a Farm Bill at all than to have this disasterous piece of legislation. Keep government out of decision making!!!

We Lost Today’s Battle – Without a Vote – But the War is Far From Over... Today, the hemp-killing Mary Miller Amendment was passed without a roll call vote. Despite our efforts and over 7,000 emails sent by Hemp Supporters in just 12 hours, the House Agriculture Committee grouped it with other amendments for a voice vote, which passed. The Farm Bill now moves to the House floor, where its passage is uncertain. We need to stay united and keep the pressure on Congress. Our email campaign has been adjusted – we're now urging all Representatives to vote against the Farm Bill unless the Mary Miller Amendment is removed. Please use our Federal Action Center (linked in comments) to send another email to your Member of Congress to oppose the Farm Bill with this damaging amendment and protect the future of hemp.
