We conducted a two-day training session for the District and Provincial Coordinators of Punjab and Sindh for the project "Zero Dose Costing in Pakistan.” Led by Dr. Ali Turab and Zille Huma from PHC Global and Laura Boonstoppel, Rachel Archer and Christina Banks from ThinkWell, the training focused on best practices for data collection, emphasizing methods to reduce errors and enhance the accuracy of the data collected. The economic study is a collaborative project of PHC Global and ThinkWell that aims to estimate the cost of reaching out to zero-dose children through specific interventions and identify the programmatic and financial factors that impact the implementation of these interventions. Earlier today as a part of an insightful panel discussion on medicines and supply chain system, i deep dived into the case of Pakistan… lots of work to do in this space! I hope we pave way for “medicine security”- having uninterrupted, timely, effective and quality medicines and supplies available for the people of Pakistan! Tremendous learning from other fellow panelists from Tanzania, Indonesia and Kenya. Before the day ends, we are thrilled to share the publication of our contribution to the Health Systems & Reform's special issue on Objective-Oriented Health Systems Reform! In this paper, we share our perspectives as external knowledge brokers supporting the Universal Health Care Law's implementation - keeping sight of our core objective of equitable access to quality healthcare while navigating the messy realities of reform. The path hasn't been particularly easy these past few years. We've weathered political transitions, a global pandemic, and the complex task of aligning diverse stakeholder interests. But that's the reality of health system reforms—they require constant problem-solving, plausible solutions, and continuous evaluation while keeping sight of our ultimate goal—UHC. Perhaps this paper is also particularly special for us because we are sharing this space with a beloved mentor who constantly reminds us to remain flexible, to continue problem-solving, to continue to rally, and to keep our eye on seeing the reforms needed be pushed through…. This paper is our contribution to the global dialogue on keeping health financing reforms objective oriented. It joins an inspiring collection of perspectives from reformers worldwide who are working to keep health system reforms focused on clear objectives while adapting to complex realities. After the successful training for our project “Zero-Dose Costing in Pakistan”, we conducted a two-day piloting exercise to test the tools designed for data collection. The tools were tested at various healthcare facilities, including BHU Shahpur, BHU Kacha, and a mobile clinic (Clinic on Wheels) to evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of the tools in the field. Feedback on the tool kit was gathered to improve the kit before the full-scale implementation starts. Health insurance schemes in low- and middle-income countries are often closely associated with the idea of universal health coverage; however, in many cases, coverage falls short of the universal ideal, and it is often those most in need who do not benefit. The purpose of this #HSR2024 session is to explore why this is, understand the practical challenges countries face, and share different approaches to tackling the problem.
