You know that empowering patients to take charge of their own health can be key. Self-cannulation might feel intimidating to some, but with support and training it can become a routine step in a patient’s treatment journey. Encourage your dialysis patients to explore whether home hemodialysis could be the right fit for them by discussing the benefits and considerations of HHD: https://lnkd.in/ekRi48qh

As a Patient Advocacy Manager on the Fresenius Medical Care Home Therapies team for 4 years, Katelyn is all about making sure patients’ voices are heard loud and clear! ??Something she's proud of??? "We recently hosted a Health Equity Event in Miami, where we had the opportunity to provide kidney education to the South Florida community. The event featured a range of professionals, including a Social Worker, Nephrologist, Transplant Doctor, and Patient Advocates, who shared their invaluable expertise and personal experiences. Beyond offering education, the event allowed attendees to connect with others in their community who are on similar journeys. As a patient myself, I understand how important it is to feel like you’re not alone, and I believe our event helped foster that sense of connection and support." ??Fun Fact?? I am a huge Swiftie and I like to tell people that I'm featured on a Taylor Swift song. I'm not really. In reality, she just released a live version of the song and I'm somewhere in the crowd singing along (very poorly). Katelyn’s work is all about connection and care. Let’s give her a round of applause! ?? #PatientSpotlight #HealthEquity #SwiftieAtHeart #PatientAdvocacy

We’re always inspired by how dialysis patients make home hemodialysis (HHD) fit their lives. Hearing from NxStage users about the convenience and freedom HHD can offer reminds us why we do what we do. It’s all about improving quality of life and empowering patients to take more control over their health. Have you discussed HHD with your patients? It could be the option they’ve been looking for! Not all patients may experience these benefits.

Jenipher McMillan, RN, CDN is a passionate Clinical Consultant with over 12 years as an RN and more than 20 years in healthcare. Her journey as a nurse is not just a profession, but a calling deeply rooted in her family’s legacy of care. Q: What’s the best thing about being a nurse, and why did you choose this profession? A: "Helping others during their most vulnerable moments is truly a privilege. Nursing runs in my family, from my mother, who was a dialysis nurse for 35+ years, to my grandmother and great aunts. It’s in my blood! I love getting to know our patients, especially in home dialysis." Q: What passions do you have outside of nursing? A: "I love hiking, chasing sunsets, and spending time outdoors with my husband. We’re also enjoying wedding planning for our daughter! Volunteering with the youth at our church and spending time with our great nieces and nephews are some of our favorite ways to stay connected with family." Q: Any advice for future nurses? A: "Never lose sight of why you became a nurse. Advocate for your patients and keep learning every day. Nursing is about more than just care—it’s about making a difference." Q: Tips for transitioning to home hemodialysis (HHD)? A: "Remember your ‘WHY.’ Whether it’s for more time with family or the ability to work again, keep that at the forefront. Yes, HHD requires commitment, but the reward far outweighs the burden." Q: What’s your favorite thing about HHD with NxStage? systems? A: The real lives that have been changed. Seeing patients regain control of their lives is so rewarding. Each patient’s story is a reminder of why I’m so passionate about this therapy." Jenipher’s dedication and love for her profession are inspiring, and her commitment to improving lives is a powerful reminder of the impact nurses have on patient care.

We believe in the power of open conversations to create change. Patient Advocates like Rosheen don’t just speak with dialysis patients about treatment options; they also engage with medical professionals, offering a unique perspective that can reshape how home dialysis is viewed and offered. As Rosheen puts it, “It’s about having conversations that provide helpful insight and change your approach. Let’s stop calling challenges barriers and start seeing them as hurdles we can find a way around.” Let’s keep the conversation going and bring more options to those in need!
