ACT to End Violence Against Women is a new game-changing commitment between the European Commission and UN Women that aims to accelerate efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women through Advocacy, Coalition Building, and Transformative Feminist Action. Through direct investments in feminist movements, strengthening intersectional alliances, and coordinating a shared advocacy agenda, ACT will amplify women’s rights movements as they coordinate their push for justice. Global emergencies, crises, and conflict have intensified the drivers and risk factors of violence against women and girls. Digitalization and technology have exacerbated existing forms of violence and led to the development of new forms. However, there is more evidence than ever before showing that violence against women and girls is preventable. The presence of a strong and autonomous feminist movement is the single most critical factor to drive policy change in ending violence against women. Violence against women and girls remains the most pervasive human rights violation worldwide, affecting millions of women and girls and communities across the globe. Last week THE ZVG and our CEO Zain Verjee hosted the launch of The ACT Programme. This is a game-changing initiative from UN Women and funded by The European Union, building on the unprecedented investment of the EU's spotlight initiative to end violence against women and girls.? ACT will encapsulate this momentum and focus?on building transformative coalitions of feminist movements that will drive real change.

There is #NoExcuse for gender-based violence. Yet, 1 in 3 women globally have been subjected to physical or sexual violence at least once in their life. That’s why we are teaming up with the European Commission to roll out the ACT programme. One of the highlights at #unga was the untold story of Africa’s pandemic response. Here were my opening remarks outlining our story, solutions and our perseverance. If you want to understand Africa, understand what happened here. It’s proof too that not all superhero’s wear capes … YOUR EXCELLENCIES, DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.? WELCOME TO THE UNTOLD STORY? OF AFRICA’S PANDEMIC RESPONSE. IT IS A DRAMATIC STORY OF GUTS, OF TEAMWORK, AND DETERMINATION ... AS OUR CONTINENT FACED DOWN A MICROSCOPIC VIRUS THAT THREATENED OUR LIVES. AS A KENYAN, I WOULD SAY THIS IS A STORY OF “HARAMBEE.”? HARAMBEE IS A SWAHILI WORD, THAT IS SIGNIFICANT IN KENYAN CULTURE AND NATIONAL IDENTITY.? IT LITERALLY MEANS, “TO PULL TOGETHER.” IT EMBODIES THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY, COLLABORATION AND MUTUAL SUPPORT. THE COVID DAYS … WERE OUR GREATEST HARAMBEE.?? WE ALL WITNESSED HOW THE WORLD CHOSE TO DISTRIBUTE VACCINES: TO THE WEALTHY AND WHITE. ? THE WORLD TURNED ITS BACK ON OUR CONTINENT, DESPITE DIRE PREDICTIONS THAT COVID WOULD RAVAGE AFRICA. AS AFRICANS WE ARE USED TO THIS. WE HAVE HAD THIS KIND OF RACIST ATTITUDES FROM THE WEST.? WE SAID THIS TIME, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. AND WE CAME TOGETHER. OUR LEADERS PULLED TOGETHER …DEMONSTRATING EXTRAORDINARY? LEADERSHIP. OUR COMMUNITIES SHOWED COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY.? AND INDIVIDUALS SHOWED COURAGE. WE FOUND OUR OWN SOLUTIONS , OUR OWN APPROACH, FOR OUR OWN PEOPLE. TODAY WE ARE HONOURED TO UNVEIL TWO PIECES OF WORK, WHICH WILL ENSURE AFRICA’S COVID STORY IS CAPTURED ACCURATELY. ? YOU WILL BE THE FIRST TO SEE A DOCUMENTARY PREVIEW OF ?“AFRICA, COVID AND BEYOND. ” AND THE BOOK LAUNCH OF? “RIDING THE STORM: THE UNTOLD STORY OF AFRICA’S RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC’ THESE WORKS ARE A TESTIMONY TO THE TRUISM THAT NOT ALL SUPERHEROS WEAR CAPES.? THEY? CHRONICLE THE HEROIC EFFORTS OF OUR AFRICAN LEADERS COMING TOGETHER TO BATTLE A TINY SUPER VILLAIN THAT BROUGHT THE WORLD TO A SHUDDERING STOP. YOU WILL HEAR ABOUT HOW AFRICA UNIFIED ITS POSITION.? HOW WE POOLED RESOURCES.? HOW WE BROKE THROUGH BARRIERS AND BOUNDARIES.? THE LATE NIGHT STRATEGY SESSIONS, THE URGENT CONVERSATIONS, THE FIGHT AGAINST THE CLOCK.? FROM VACCINE PROCUREMENT TO DELIVERY , IT WAS A BATTLE. AND WE DID NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. FAILURE WAS NOT AN OPTION. AS OUR CLASSIC PROVERB REMINDS US: "IF YOU WANT TO GO FAST, GO ALONE. BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO FAR, GO TOGETHER." The ZVG team had an excellent #unga week. From supporting Mastercard Foundation with a convening on education and gender, to showcasing a film and book on the untold story of how African superheros came together during the pandemic African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) We had important conversations at United Nations Women on violence against women and launched ACT. We were moved by powerful conversations of survival and strength. We were thrilled to be at the #apollo theater for the launch of our client Next Narrative Africa Fund where 40m USD will be raised to invest, create jobs and grow talent in Africa. Clinical trials and health financing in Africa were a big agenda item for our team and we facilitated discussions around this topic with key players The AfroChampions Initiative What a week.
