Bringing real world learning opportunities and community connections to students in an all-in wholistic way merits a brief pause to show gratitude to brave leaders at On Track Academy who let students #CreateWhatsNext. PARTNER OF THE YEAR: On Track Academy was recently recognized as the 2024 Northwest Community Center ZONE Partner of the Year! The Hillyard Campus neighbors have been working together since The ZONE Spokane, an initiative to support the wrap around needs of students in Northeast Spokane by Spokane Public Schools and the City of Spokane at the Northeast Community Center, was designated as a Youth Wellness Zone by the Washington Legislature. The ZONE partnered with On Track Academy to create Wellness Plus classes where students are conversations about what wellness means to youth, what it looks like in our neighborhoods, and actions community can take to support youth mental health and wellness. These OTA student leaders have presented to the Senate Human Services committee in Olympia, presented a Youth Wellness Showcase at City Hall attended by School Board Directors and other elected officials including Mayor Brown, and presented at the 2025 End The Violence Conference in Spokane. The community is invited to hear from these students at OTA Winter Showcase, March 13, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., where students share progress on what they have been learning and exploring this year. Congratulations to the OTA community for your award, and thank you to the ZONE for supporting our students’ learning and wellness!

After hours childcare has been a complete desert in The ZONE Spokane. Yesterday Kerra Bower, Baker Construction & Development, Inc. , Stephaine Nobles-Beans, children and community gathered to #BREAK that reality. Literally sledgehammer out the evening entrance, so that kids can be safe and loved while their parents work. A #great day for our community and the City of Spokane. Our The ZONE Spokane Director focuses on #belonging and supporting the goals and next steps of youth and adults through her work here Northeast Community Center, and throughout the City of Spokane through partners such as EWI of Spokane and #LumenHighSchool.
??Board Spotlight: Meet Our B/C/DP Director Jene Ray! ?? We are excited to introduce Jene Ray, our B/C/DP (Business Career Development Program), Director of The ZONE at Northeast Community Center. Jene previously served two years as Scholarship Chair. This is her second term as an EWI Spokane board director overseeing the scholarship and philanthropy committees. We asked Jene a few questions to get to know her better – here’s what she shared: Q: Why do you volunteer your time on boards and committees? A: My day job is, as a resident steering committee member in Northeast Spokane just shared, “mentoring community members to uplift themselvesâ€. Whether it’s providing scholarships for adults returning to education, or supporting high school students who have taken an alternative education route, my volunteer positions align with walking beside our community and breaking down barriers as residents achieve their goals. Q:Do you have a fun fact to share with us? A: I was a kindergarten teacher. If I was a dog, I’d be a herding breed. I’m constantly looking for who’s on the outside and can be brought in. Join us in celebrating another year of leadership on our board! ?? EWI of Spokane Northeast Community Center
