To reach Jonglei in central South Sudan, one must bypass Al-Sudd, a massive 250-mile-long swamp that drains into the White Nile. More than four decades of fighting have left the state’s capital, Bor — an epicenter of the nation’s ethnically-driven civil wars — in poor shape. Communities rely on fishing, farming, and livestock herding as their main sources of livelihood; access to healthcare facilities, social services, and infrastructure remains extremely limited. For instance, the tarmac road snaking from Bor to Panpandiar village wasn’t built until 2023. However, since September 2024, between 600,000 and 1 million residents in South Sudan have been potentially exposed to floods. The young country is ill-equipped to accommodate its internally displaced peoples, and Jonglei is no exception. This story builds upon our 2024 reporting in neighboring Kenya, where the local government has been defying court orders to violently evict the Maasai's rivals, the Ogiek minority, from the Mau Forest while making similar deals with Emirati-controlled carbon-trading companies. I'm still based out of Nairobi, Kenya but am making my way west from Tanzania to Zambia's Copperbelt for reporting at this very moment. Since joining The Xylom's editorial team last year, they have been incredibly supportive of my work: investigating the devastating ecological and economic impacts of the Mumbai Coastal Road, reporting on armed conflicts and the politics of peace from the Ilemi Triangle (an obscure disputed territory between Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan), disability rights in flood and conflict-stricken South Sudan, amongst other stories.
