Disability History Month is a time to celebrate the disabled activists, advocates, and changemakers who have shaped the movement towards ending disability exclusion. In her renowned TED talk, Stella Young challenged us to understand that disability isn't about individual impairments – it's created when society fails to accommodate every person. She urges us to move past 'inspiration porn' and focus on what really matters: dismantling the systemic barriers that exclude disabled people. Her message resonates strongly in workplaces today, where disability inclusion requires dedicated resources, structural changes, and sustained commitment. For businesses, this means examining everything from office accessibility to hiring practices to advancement opportunities. True inclusion means setting high expectations, removing obstacles, and recognising professional achievements - not tokenism. Watch the TED talk here: https://lnkd.in/gGcJqYR This Disability History Month, let's honour activists like Stella by turning their insights into action. Are your workplace systems and culture truly enabling everyone to thrive? #DisabilityHistoryMonth #DisabilityInclusion?

    • A photograph of Stella Young, taken during her TED Talk. She is pictured in her wheelchair, wearing a black dress with a white geometric pattern. Her short blonde hair is stylishly cut, and she is speaking confidently, using a headset microphone. Overlaid on the photo is pink text featuring the title "I’m Not Your Inspiration, Thank You Very Much," followed by a subtitle, "Powerful quotes from Stella Young’s famous TED talk."
    • The image features a deep purple background with two blocks of bright pink text framed in rectangles. The text reads 'Stella Young was a disability activist who challenged societal perceptions of disability and the treatment of disabled people. She advocated for a world where people with disabilities are treated as equals rather than being viewed as objects of pity or inspiration.
    • "We've been sold the lie that disabiltity is a bad thing... and to live with disability makes you exceptional. It's not a bad thing, and it doesn't make you exceptional."
    • "We are more disabled by the society that we live in than by our bodies and our diagnoses."
    • "Disability doesn't make you exceptional, but questioning what you think you know about it does."

TechShare Pro 2024 delivered powerful insights on accessible advertising and disability inclusion. The discussions reinforced what we at Valuable 500 know to be true - disability inclusion drives business advantage and innovation. The Accessible Advertising Summit on day one showcased powerful examples of inclusive advertising with campaigns like CoorDown ‘Assume I Can’ and Cadbury’s BSL Chocolate Fingers. Beyond advertising, Shani Dhanda’s adaptive fashion work with Primark and Channel 4’s Paralympics coverage showed how authentic inclusion resonates widely. Katy Talikowska spoke about how inclusive practices not only reflect good values but also drive market impact and innovation. This principle underpins our work on the Authentic Representation Tool (ART), designed to help organisations create genuinely inclusive and accessible touchpoints. On day two, a key takeaway was the need for comprehensive leadership support. Senior leadership buy-in is essential, but middle management also plays a crucial role in advancing organisational change around accessibility. The insights and conversations proved that change is happening, but there’s still much more work to be done. Thank you to HSBC, AbilityNet, and everyone who made this event such a dynamic space for innovation and learning. #Inclusion #DisabilityRepresentation #AuthenticRepresentation [Image description: A photo of a panel discussion. “Data for the sake of data does not serve the disability community well and in some cases can do harm. [...] Data with intent does, and can be a powerful instrument of change.” Last year, we introduced phase one of our Self-ID Resource Guide, a foundational step in supporting businesses on their self-identification journey. In partnership with Google and Deloitte, we’ve added new case studies and essential resources from Valuable 500 companies, partners and directory members. Each is designed to empower you and your business in navigating this critical process.? I've seen firsthand the power of disability inclusion to drive innovation, enhance performance, and improve customer relations. But one of the biggest hurdles I've faced in advocating for change is getting businesses to recognise disability is not only a priority but a strategic opportunity. I know that the fear of making mistakes can halt progress. That’s why we always encourage companies to embrace disability inclusion as a continuous journey. Start small, be transparent, measure accountable progress, target and grow over time. Full interview for The The European Business Review:?https://lnkd.in/emvmZdiK
