As we wrap up the International Day of the Girl, it's crucial to remember: When we empower girls and women through education, we equip them with the tools to shape their lives, shape the future, tackle global challenges, and advocate for their families and communities. Over 300 supporters attended the Sept. 7 Pratham USA Gala in Washington, D.C., where they raised an incredible $822,000 in one night! ?? This event, coming just weeks before the International Day of the Girl, underscores Pratham's commitment to girls' education in India. As they celebrate 25 years of transformative work in education, their initiatives are more essential than ever, especially considering that over 50% of 10-year-olds are unable to read at grade level. Highlights from the evening included a keynote by comedian Nimesh Patel and a moving live call with a young girl who has benefited from Pratham's Second Chance Program. This initiative has helped over 11,500 women and girls earn their high school diplomas, empowering them to create lasting change. What stands out about Pratham is their transparency and innovative approach to funding, allowing donors to direct contributions where they are most needed. Their impact has been profound: last year, they engaged 650,000 children and reached an additional 8.3 million through partnerships with government agencies. As the world observes this day of celebration of girls as well as a promise to improve, the Washington gala reminds us of the privilege of giving and our collective responsibility to ensure that every child, especially girls, has access to quality education. It's International Day of the Girl Child: a day to celebrate girls as visionaries, dreamers, and architects of tomorrow—as well as a time to reflect on the continued challenges, barriers, biases, assumptions, and dangers that may obstruct their path to realizing their aspirations. Girls envision a future where they: - have boundless opportunities to pursue their dreams - are respected for their voices, bodies, accomplishments, and potential - live in a safe, sustainable, and equal world - receive education that empowers them to shape the future - freely choose and forge their own paths in life - explore the world, discover their place in it, and embrace all it has to offer While we've made progress, there's still a long way to go to truly realize the future girls envision—a future of equality and thriving for everyone, regardless of gender. It’s Ada Lovelace Day, a day each year to honor the tech visionary credited with writing the first computer program—and to discuss both the gender gap in science and technology and the amazing women role models in STEM. As she was a pioneer for women in science and technology, a trailblazing mathematician, and the first computer programmer—predating what we know as computers—the love for Lovelace is understandable. After beginning a correspondence with mathematician Charles Babbage and while translating notes on a project he was developing called the “Analytical Engine,” Lovelace added her own notes, adding her own insights and ideas in addition to the translation. She recognized the potential of Babbage’s machine to produce letters, music, and more in addition to numerical calculations; anticipating computers by a century. Famously, she added handwritten step-by-step instructions to calculate Bernoulli numbers, an important sequence in number theory—writing what was essentially the first algorithm, and becoming the first computer programmer. Today marks Latina Equal Pay Day, a sobering reminder of the persistent wage gap facing Latina workers in our country. This date symbolizes how far into 2024 Latina workers must labor to earn what white, non-Hispanic men made in 2023 alone. The situation has worsened. Latina workers now earn just 51 cents for every dollar paid to white men, down from 52 cents last year. This gap translates to a staggering loss of $1.3 million over a 40-year career — that's $32,070 in lost wages every year, or $2,672 each month. Latinas are disproportionately represented in essential yet undervalued fields like care work, healthcare, and domestic services. These jobs, despite requiring similar qualifications, pay less than male-dominated industries. Moreover, Latina workers face higher rates of workplace discrimination, health challenges, and economic instability. Education isn't a shield: Even Latinas with advanced degrees face significant pay disparities. A Latina with a professional degree could lose over $2.9 million to the wage gap during her career. This Latina Equal Pay Day, its time for all of us to call for change. Support comprehensive pay equity legislation, workplace anti-discrimination measures, and initiatives that truly value traditionally women-dominated professions. Closing the wage gap we not only supports Latina workers as they deserve—it strengthens our entire economy and society. ALL workers and their time are valuable. We like to talk about the importance of speaking up. And it’s no secret that not everyone has the same platform, ability, resources, or connections to make their message heard. But while it’s important to stand up and speak out for the rights of others and in the face of injustice or inequality, none of us is a “voice for the voiceless.”? ? We’re using our own voices. And while that’s crucial, it’s always best to hear each person’s perspective, needs, and lived experience from them (if they’re able and wish to share).? ? Before we let being a “voice” for someone else turn into speaking over their voice, we should ask: Have I tried passing the mic?? ? Instead of a “voice for the voiceless,” be a champion. Pass the mic. Be the mic. Step aside. Make more room. Spotlight perspectives that need to be heard.? ? And if it’s your perspective: You own your story. Your voice is powerful.? ? No one is voiceless—and everyone deserves to be heard.
