Our Anniversary 15 Years ago today, Jennifer and I stayed up after Thanksgiving dinner, to shoot these images so I could post on our newly set up amazon account to sell our salt collections. She took the cloth runner from the buffet, checking for spots, I scraped the dining room table clean and light the salt collection with my Proforo strobes. By midnight we had a few good images. I worked the next few hours and posted “Salt collection No. 1” to amazon. This is what that started it all, and turned a holiday gift for our friends into a 35m business . Fun Facts: We hand made these in our garage on tools I “liberated” from my fathers house in Boca. The intention was to make 30 of the sets and give them to friends and family, I only posted them on amazon because a few friends wanted to buy them and gift them to their friends. What a mistake… we sold over 200 kits in 2 weeks, we did not have the blocks, tubes, corks or salts to make them… We had enough to make 50 kits in total. Oh the fun… we scrambled and all orders where filled by December 21st. None of my friends or family got any gifts… I had to stiff them as I did not account for anyone actually buying them online… and the insanity started. Notice the name on the paper sticker spray glued to the blocks “The Salt Lab”. Jennifer came up with the name “The Spice Lab” only one small issue, the domain was taken, it was not used, but taken and parked. We called the company “The Spice Lab”, and bought “TheSaltLab.com” to setup a shopping cart. The name TheSpiceLab.com was going to expire in February 2010. I put a $15.00 bid in, figuring if they really wanted it they would renew it, no one else would want an obscure name like The Spice Lab and $15.00 would do it.. Yes we got it… Gift Collection No. 2 was released in February 2010. We also started to sell refill Jars by mid-year 2010 as people used up the salts in the tubes and needed a refill. jennifer would not allow me to sell our premium salts in cheap zip lock bags. So, the 100ml Jar program started. We where the first company to have a line of gourmet salts in Glass Jars. Notice image 5-6, this is the insert card we sent with the kits, it says “Fine Salts Spices & Tea” and “The Spice Lab” as I don’t have a copy of the original cards for November 2009. I only have the February 2010 after we got the new domain name. Thanks for reading threw this fun trip down memory lane.
