Tax season is already stressful, but scammers? They’re making it a nightmare! In 2023 alone, the IRS flagged $5.5 billion in tax fraud - and older adults are the biggest targets. These fraudsters are slick, using AI and advanced tactics to trick people. But we can outsmart them! Watch out for these 4 four red flags: ?? Urgent Payment Demands – The IRS never asks for gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto. ?? Threats & Harassment – No, you’re not getting arrested over a phone call! ?? Too-Good-To-Be-True Refunds – If it sounds fishy, it is. ?? Weird Details – Spelling mistakes, odd links (like “irsgov.com”) are major red flags. If something feels off, don’t engage - verify first. As a fourth-generation entrepreneur, supporting women is part of who I am - whether through mentorship, sharing their stories, or encouraging them to go for it! We recognize pioneering women transforming lives like Cheryl Robinson, Ed.D. Kim Komando, and Meaghan Murphy - who advocate for women’s empowerment—and visionaries in AgeTech, including Nicole Will, Sarah Thomas, Charlotte Yeh, Sarah Hoit, Abby Bloom, Fara McLaughlin, M.S. in Aging, and Carrie Aalberts, MS (along with those in the comments!). That’s why Social Security Administration and the Federal Trade Commission have teamed up for #NationalConsumerProtectionWeek to promote Slam the Scam Day today. At The Smarter Service, we work hard to help older adults recognize and avoid scams before they happen. The first rule of scam prevention? If something feels off, it probably is. In addition: ?? Always check the sender’s email or phone number – Scammers use small variations to appear legitimate. ?? Beware of high-pressure tactics – Urgency is a red flag. ?? Verify before acting – Call a trusted source before sending money or sharing information. ?? Monitor your finances – Regularly review bank statements for unauthorized transactions. From phishing emails to "grandparent scams," fraudsters rely on deception and urgency. But with awareness, you can protect yourself and your loved ones. ??
