Temperature measurement can be achieved through various instruments and methods. The most common include thermocouples, RTDs (Resistance Temperature Detectors), and infrared pyrometers. Thermocouples consist of two dissimilar metals that generate a voltage that varies with temperature. RTDs measure temperature by changing their electrical resistance in response to temperature fluctuations. Infrared thermometers utilize detectors to assess the emitted energy from an object at specific wavelengths, allowing them to gauge temperature based on the infrared radiation emitted. Measuring high temperatures poses challenges, as conventional contact methods like thermocouples and RTDs can be damaged or melted when exposed to extreme heat. In these situations, infrared pyrometers are particularly useful, providing safe and accurate temperature readings in industries such as metal heat treatment. To ensure precision, pyrometers must be calibrated regularly at a NIST or SI traceable calibration facility. Users should also familiarize themselves with the device by reading the user manual and paying close attention to key parameters, particularly emissivity. Emissivity indicates an object's ability to emit infrared energy, ranging from 0 (perfectly reflective, like a shiny mirror) to 1.0 (a perfect blackbody) (Fluke Process Instruments, 2024). For instance, mortar has an emissivity of 0.87, but it's important to note that real-world emissivity values will not reach the extremes of 0 or 1. Additionally, users should ensure that there are no obstructions between the pyrometer and the surface being measured. Distance is another important factor; some pyrometers come with focusable lenses and lasers to pinpoint the target, while others have fixed lenses requiring precise distance measurements for accurate focus. If measurements are taken through a glass window, the transmissivity parameter may need to be adjusted to account for the transparency of the barrier between the pyrometer and the target surface.
