Pat Reser, Chair of The Reser Family Foundation, recently received an award from the International Dairy Deli Bakery Association and shared some inspiring words about the power of ideas.
The talk of the show was the incredible IDDBA Chair Award event. By tradition, the chair of the board for IDDBA presents their award to an individual who inspires them. This year, IDDBA Chair Peter Sirgy presented this award to Pat Reser, Chair at Reser's Fine Foods, whom he called "a visionary, a luminary, a mentor, and my friend" - giving her the stage. As the speech began, she opened with a concept and then connected it to something tangible from a big question: WHAT DO IDEAS BECOME? "Ideas become big things, brave things, smart things, silly things, good things - like stories and artwork, journeys and communities, and inventions, products, and cures. Everything on the exhibit floor…everything we see around us was once an idea." From there she told the very personal story of her family, who had a vision of a small potato salad business but in the face of adversity - "a business on the verge of bankruptcy" moving to success, now in 14 major facilities in North America. In telling the personal details of the story of her life and her husband Al Reser's life, she wasn't just sharing any story, but an incredible example of an American Success Story. And like almost all powerful stories, it didn't go in a straight line. "Success was not a linear path. It required taking risks and experiencing failures, pushing limits, all of which helped us learn and grow [...] And, as we all have learned from experience ... the day the seed is planted is not the day one eats the fruit." She had a message for all of us as she began to end her speech: "I invite you to embrace the concept that true leadership is not measured by the heights we reach, but by the lives we touch and the legacy we leave behind. Gatherings like this, organized by the wonderful IDDBA team, highlight the importance of our collective work and being part of a community." Our community is so grateful to include among its ranks inspiring leaders like Pat Reser. Everyone at #IDDBA2024 who saw this speech is sure to remember it, and we hope that they were as touched by her words as many of us were.
