While each international school is unique, no matter the size or curriculum or the number of students or for profit or not, all do have some form of governance, be it a single person or a team, charged with setting direction and ensuring kids are getting what the mission promises. That we all share this one facet is at the heart of why it can be so valuable to sit at the same table to get better at governing. About 3-4 decades ago the notion of having a 'mission' made its way into the world of schooling. Before that (and some of us are old enough to remember!), to be called a 'school' seemed to be enough for us to understand our purpose and, more or less, what to do each day. Today, as we have learned more and more about how learning happens, about how to maximize opportunities for learning, and understand better how we in schools must contribute to the many major global issues we as humanity face, a more precise mission has become essential. We at the GTC see 'mission' as a set of promises - promises we are making for today to our families, promises that we intend to keep. How do we know we are keeping them? However your international school is set up, there will be some form of governance whose role it is to set direction, safeguard the mission, provide legitimacy and ensure accountability. The governing?body or person is charged with making decisions that have a significant impact on student learning and the experience they will have at your school.??It's a critical role with its own set of skills and tools, often in the hands of volunteers who have wonderful intentions and are eager to get it right. It's feeling rather urgent to us here at PTC/GTC so we are working diligently to refine just what those skills and tools are and look forward to sharing these at our first in-person 'Governance' Matters' weekend for this school year.
