Day 1 of my Oslo-trip ??? H?kon and I met with Runar Rugtvedt from Norsk Industri. Norsk Industri is a powerhouse driving Norway’s industrial success, uniting over 3,000 companies. They shape the future of Norwegian industry by facilitating greater value creation in Norway. Value creation secures welfare, creates jobs and strengthen local communities. It was truly inspiring to learn more about the different markets and the next years’ foresights. We (Stressman Engineering) signed up in a heartbeat and are now proud members of Norsk Industri ?????? Today I am off to meet with Entail (Stefan Schl?milch and his team) and then to Lysaker for a coffee with Ayman Abdelhadi ?? Are you in Oslo and like a coffee? Let me know and we might find time to meet up. #norway #engineering #industry #stressmanlife

Pump pulsations (FIV) ?? High pressure mud systems with Triplex pumps can cause severe low frequency pressure pulsations. Pulsation dampeners helps a lot, but it is also important to keep the piping system's natural frequency modes away from the pulsation modes. Mud systems often have 5 or 6in piping with about 1in wall thickness, hence these systems are inherit stiff. Due to their high stiffness it is also important to evaluate the stiffness of the pipe supports, when performing the natural frequency calculations. If the piping's natural frequency modes is close to the pulsation modes, then a more detailed pulsation study should be carried out with i.e. BosPulse (software from Dynaflow Research Group). Check out EngineeringTrainer.com's Youtube channel for a more indepth description of the case below. Up it goes?? Lifting of structures, be it onshore or offshore or subsea, is a critical and potentially deadly operation. Therefore, it is important to conduct lifting analyses. These analyses should include effects such as COG shift, different lengths of the lifting slings, weight contingency, dynamic amplification factors, code load and material factors. Often we perform global and local analyses and hand calculations to ensure that the lift is safe. What code or regulation do you typically use for your lifting analyses? Subsea pipe stress ?? My favorite type of analysis is subsea manifolds and modules with high pressures and fairly high temperatures (up to 177C). The manifolds and modules often need flexibility to accommodate the large installation/fabrication tolerances and thermal well growth. But not too much flexibility, because then Flow-Induced-Vibrations and/or Vortex-Induced-Vibrations can become an fatigue issue. On top of this, if duplex and super duplex materials are used, then Hydrogen Induced Stress Cracking (HISC) may be an issue.. What is your favorite system to analyze? ?????????????????????? ???????????????????? ?????????? ?????????? Yesterday, February 13th, 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting an insightful Engineering Networking Event at Café on the Lake in Houston. The event, organized by Dynaflow Research Group and The PSI Association, brought together industry experts and engineers for an evening of knowledge-sharing and networking. During this event, Frank Bos, Partner at Dynaflow Research Group provided a presentation on "Innovative Simulation Techniques for Digital Twins," showcasing how BOSfluids can be utilized to update information to and from digital twins, and the practical applications of this technology in engineering projects. We thank everyone who participated and contributed to the valuable discussions. We’re looking forward to hosting more events like this in the future! Bachelor thesis! ?? Our project consists of four phases; Building of the support structure, Flange leakage tests, Data processing and finally the writing itself. Its quite an exiting project and we want to thank Stressman Engineering for the assignment and Universitetet i S?r?st-Norge for facilitating the building and testing?? So far we have learned that theory and old articles on the matter of flange calculations are hard to get to the bottom of??. We have brushed dust (much dust) of skills as welding, grinding, cutting and operating machinery, and we are currently being overwhelmed by the amount of welding and the level of accuracy to achieve high quality results later???? Ill post some updates along the way, so stay tuned!?? My partners in crime, my fellow students in frustration; J?rgen Skifjeld Jensen and Ken Lien ????

ASME B31.3 - Stress Range Factor, f ?? In the 1950s, Markl conducted a series of tests that became the foundation for modern ASME B31 (and other) piping code calculation procedures. Today, stress calculations in most piping codes rely on intensified nominal stresses, incorporating stress intensification factors (SIFs). These SIFs are derived from the fatigue life of the girth butt-weld fatigue strength curve (S-N curve). While Markl’s contributions were groundbreaking, subsequent research and testing have shown that the slope of the S-N curve differs from what was derived in his tests. For instance, the ASME VIII-2 structural stress procedure and EN 13445-3 curves (up to 1 million cycles) highlight these differences. A detailed analysis of this issue, supported by test data, has been presented by Hinnant and Paulin (Paulin Research Group) in ASME PVP paper no. 61871. To address these discrepancies, the 2022 edition of ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) B31.3 includes a revision to equation (1c), which governs the stress range factor, f. While this adjustment raises further questions—such as whether SIFs should be recalibrated—aligning these slope variations marks a crucial step toward standardizing fatigue evaluation procedures across multiple codes.
