A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hosting The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers’ Future Advisory Committee (FAC) at The Plexus Groupe's downtown Chicago offices. Over two days, we engaged in insightful discussions about the evolving insurance industry, focusing on the workforce, technology (especially generative AI), and the impact of policymakers on our industry and clients. Our final Women's History Month feature highlights Tricia Griffith, a powerhouse executive who has broken barriers and continues to shape the insurance industry's future. Griffith began her career at Progressive Insurance in 1988 as a claims representative, working her way up through leadership roles before making history in 2016 as the company's first female President and CEO. Her journey - from an entry-level position to leading one of the nation's largest insurers - stands as an inspiration for women in business. A champion for DEI, Griffith launched Progressive's first-ever DEI program in 2002, followed by initiatives like the Progressive African American Network and the LGBT+ employee resource groups. Beyond insurance, Griffith has been widely recognized as a leading business executive. In November 2018, she made history as the first woman named Fortune's Businessperson of the Year. That same year, she was featured as Fortune's 13th Most Powerful Businesswoman. In 2023, Forbes ranked her as the 53rd most powerful woman in the world and 22nd on Fortune's Most Powerful Women list. Our next Women's History Month feature spotlights Dame Inga Beale, a trailblazing leader who shattered barriers in the insurance industry. In 2014, Beale made history as the first female CEO of Lloyd's of London in its 328-year history. Over the next five years, she led a major digital and cultural transformation, modernized traditional structures, and expanded into new markets. She was also a driving force behind greater workplace inclusion, launching the Pride@Lloyds network and championing diversity initiatives. Under her leadership, Lloyd’s also introduced the Dive In Festival, a global event promoting diversity and inclusion in the insurance industry. What started in 2015 as a four-day event at Lloyd’s has grown into an international movement, with over 130 events in 46+ countries. Beale's career began in 1982 as an underwriter at Prudential Assurance Company in London. She later held leadership roles at General Electric, Converium Holding AG, Zurich Insurance Group, and Lloyd's insurer Canopius before becoming Lloyd's CEO. Since stepping down from Lloyd's in 2018, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to the economy. She has remained an influential figure in business, serving as President of the British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce. In addition to her corporate leadership, she has dedicated time to advocating for public health as Chair of the HIV Commission and supporting women in insurance by founding the Insurance Supper Club, a network designed to empower female executives. Our next feature for our Women’s History Month series highlights Viola Mitchell Turner—a trailblazer who broke through barriers in the insurance industry. For over 36 years, Turner worked her way up at North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company (NCMI) and became a key figure in managing the company's investment portfolio. The portfolio originally consisted of mortgages and government bonds, but Turner decided to shift company assets to stocks. Her decision helped NCMI grow its assets well beyond the $20 million they held in the 1940s, securing the company's financial future. Her rise wasn’t without setbacks. Early in her career, Turner was paid less than male coworkers for the same roles. After protesting, she was eventually awarded equal pay. In 1957, she was appointed Treasurer, and in 1960, she made history as the first female Vice President at NCMI, one of the largest African-American-owned insurance companies in the U.S. That same year, she also became the first woman elected to NCMI’s Board of Directors. These milestones came during the pivotal era of the Civil Rights Movement, marking a significant moment for racial and gender equality in the financial services industry. Her legacy is one of perseverance and resilience, proving the power of breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in insurance.
