Celebrating Women’s History Month: Dr. Mary Gilly and the Gilly Girlz The PhD Project’s network of mentors plays a crucial role in empowering doctoral students and faculty. Often, students and junior faculty hesitate to reach out, fearing they might burden their mentors. The PhD Project breaks down these barriers by creating welcoming spaces where mentors are accessible, approachable, and eager to support the next generation of scholars. Mary Gilly exemplifies the power of mentorship through her work with the "Gilly Girlz." As Dr. Merlyn Griffiths affectionately dubbed them, the Gilly Girlz are a group of empowered, supportive women who inspire each other and uplift those around them. Mary Gilly shares her gratitude for this remarkable group: "I am grateful for the Gilly Girlz because they support each other and make me proud. Because of them, I’ve researched fascinating topics, such as culture and consumer behavior, bi-national families, and the identity projects of the elderly. Working with each of them has been an incredible gift." This Women’s History Month, we celebrate Mary Gilly and the Gilly Girlz for their invaluable contributions to academia and for fostering a community of mentorship, collaboration, and empowerment. #WomensHistoryMonth #ThePhDProject #MentorshipMatters

PhD Project member and Dean Emeritus – Dr. Quiester Craig – broke barriers in accounting education. Under his tenure, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University became the first historically Black college to earn accreditation from AACSB in 1979, setting a new standard for HBCUs. He further cemented A&T’s place among top institutions by securing separate AACSB accreditation for its accounting programs in 1986. Dean Craig’s visionary leadership created pathways for generations of students and faculty to compete at the highest levels, fostering greater inclusion in business and accounting. He mentored so many of our members over the years, and our PhD Project family misses him very much. #BlackHistoryMonth #ThePhDProject #EnrichingEducationForAll #MakingADifference #Trailblazers #Accounting
