Spend a moment with this poem, “The Place I Call Home†by Ghost Mullen, as published in our upcoming anthology release, Home and Away: Playing at the playground What an innocent sentence Climbing on the monkey bars With a tight grip but not tight enough To hold together the place you call home. The laughter bleeds into screaming When I walk out of the door Gripping Asia’s hand, tightly But not tightly enough to hold together The place I call home. ? Please join us at the Book Release & Showcase celebrating the publication of “Home and Away: Poetry, Stories & Art†on April 15, 2025, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM in the Parkrose High School Library (12003 NE Shaver St, Portland, OR 97220)! ?? It's #Advocacy Friday! Each week, we share what we’re reading, watching, and listening to from informed voices in our community and beyond. Director Rahsaan “New York†Thomas co-produced a documentary film titled ‘Friendly Signs’ exploring the impact of a sign language class at San Quentin. The class was founded by Tommy Wickerd while incarcerated. “Growing up with a deaf older brother, Wickerd witnessed the isolation of a world without proper accommodations. So when legal advocates won a 2019 petition to move a group of deaf men from underresourced prisons to program-rich San Quentin, Wickerd created his class.†??? Two members of our Pathfinders team recently shared their stories with the Oregon Legislature in support of the Family Sentencing Alternative Program (FSAP). We are so proud of Leticia and Jill for sharing their testimonies! HB 2555 will allow more caregivers and families to qualify for services, such as housing and treatment; expand who can be considered a caregiver to reflect Oregon’s diverse families; and connect families to culturally specific services. On this #Advocacy Friday, we'd like to acknowledge the 20-year anniversary of the Children of Incarcerated Parents’ Bill of Rights, a path for reform created in 2005 to advocate for children whose parents are involved in the criminal legal system. According to SUSU: “Though not legally binding, these rights tell us what children want, need, and are claiming for themselves: the right to be considered, heard, cared for, accepted without judgment, and connected to their parents now and into the future.†- I have the right to be kept safe and informed at the time of my parent's arrest. - I have the right to be heard when decisions are made about me. - I have the right to be considered when decisions are made about my parent. - I have the right to be well cared for in my parent's absence. - I have the right to speak with, see and touch my parent. - I have the right to support as I struggle with my parent's incarceration. - I have the right not to be judged, blamed or labeled because of my parent's incarceration. - I have the right to a lifelong relationship with my parent. This is Parenting Inside Out! ???
The eggs and bears are back at Parenting Inside Out at the Oregon State Penitentiary! The Egg Baby Challenge gives AIC parents a hands-on way to practice responsibility, patience, and care—24/7 for an entire week. If they successfully keep their fragile egg safe, they graduate to caring for a teddy bear, reinforcing the dedication it takes to nurture an infant. It’s more than just an exercise—it’s a powerful lesson in parenting. #DOC #ParentingInsideOut #BuildingSkills #EggBabyChallenge #ResponsibleParenting #OregonStatePenitentiary #OSP #Salem #Oregon
