In my book, “Me Time Monday,” I discuss how our brains crave a daily digital detox, balanced by time in nature. Yet, especially during the holiday season, it’s amazing to see how new tech is helping older adults and caregivers in powerful ways. From safety to social connection, tech is opening up options that can truly enhance independence. In my “Caregiving Technology” webinar—one of the most requested this time of year— I dive into three age-tech categories: Staying Healthy, Staying Safe, and Staying Connected. Examples include fall-detecting smartwatches with GPS (such as Theora Care Inc.), robotic pets for those with dementia (Ageless Innovation, LLC Joy for All Companions Pets), virtual travel experiences (such as Discover Live and Wowzitude), and online classes for seniors exploring new skills (GetSetUp). The best way to support loved ones’ tech use is to pair it with the guidance of a compassionate Comfort Keepers professional. Caregivers can help older adults feel confident with new devices, answer their questions, and enrich their engagement. Together, tech and a personal touch create the joy that makes every age feel meaningful. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gsTq9PzY

Falls are a leading cause of injury and death among older adults, and the risks are even higher for people with dementia. Clairvoyant Networks, Inc., one of the five finalists in the Longitude Prize on Dementia, is tackling this challenge with innovative wearable technology. Combining AI, machine learning, and ultra-wideband radar technology, their product Theora 360 offers precise motion and fall risk tracking. It monitors gait, stride, and balance to generate real-time risk scores—empowering caregivers to intervene early and prevent serious injuries. Preliminary testing with users and collaboration with research partners at Texas A&M University have validated the device's potential. The team now aims to expand testing to diverse households, refine the technology, and ensure it remains affordable for widespread use. By addressing the devastating impact of falls, Clairvoyant Networks is contributing to safer, healthier futures for individuals and their caregivers alike.
