The Opportunity Initiative harnesses first-person narrative storytelling through our award-winning, behaviorally designed reality series, Opportunity Knocks, to reduce shame and boost personal agency—key drivers of economic outcomes. Airing on PBS, the show has won 16 awards for social impact, education, and best television series from Viddy, Telly, Anthem W3, dotComm, and the Academy of Reality Television. The Series Opportunity Knocks spotlights real families and guides viewers to “live the show” by connecting them with our digital tools: The Opportunity Finder and The Opportunity Coach. These platforms provide personalized plans that empower individuals and link them to 17,000 community nonprofits, not-for-profit credit unions, and CDFIs offering services from eliminating payday loans to career training and startup support. Our approach prioritizes shame elimination and access to real solutions over deficit-focused financial education. Our Mission We believe everyone deserves access to opportunities. We believe in the potential and desire of the 54 million Americans—40% of the U.S. population—living on survival budgets, including 75% of single female-headed households with children, to live their best lives. Guided by our core values, we co-design and improve our program with the beneficiaries we serve. Our Strategy ? Eliminate Shame: Empower individuals with dignity. Recognize people are suffering in silence. Show they are not alone. ? Increase Agency: Empower people with plans to improve their economic futures. ? Remove Barriers: Eliminate obstacles to accessing wrap-around support from nonprofits and capital from not-for-profit credit unions and CDFIs. Success 100% of families participating in Opportunity Knocks remain financially stable, and 92% have achieved their financial goals.
