It's here! Our first Wild Flower Hotline report of 2025 is live! While every spring we celebrate California's unique blooms, we realize 2025 is not looking like a "superbloom" year, but the resilience of our flora is already proving to be awe-inspiring, nonetheless. In the words of our resident Hotline writer, Lorrae Fuentes: "We must acknowledge that friends and field reporters are among those living in the San Gabriel and Santa Monica Mountains who have been devastatingly impacted by the recent LA region wildfires. Many favorite wildflower viewing sites and trails are also closed indefinitely. In addition, cuts in federal funding for employees working on public lands (National Parks, Forest Service, National Monuments, BLM, etc.) will result in reduction of the amount of information provided to us about wildflower blooms in SoCal regions. The long drought has also exacerbated the impact of these events. The little rainfall we have had recently may be “too little, too late.” We are resolved, however, to seek out and report wildflower sightings wherever it is safe and accessible. We hope to provide opportunity for experiences that will have the public wondering at the resilience of nature." Photo Descriptions 1. The Walgrove Wildlands is a nearly one-acre native habitat and outdoor classroom imagined and funded by the parents, staff, and community of Walgrove Elementary School. The Wildlands, along with its juxtaposed half-acre veggie garden, adds beautiful greenery to an otherwise asphalt-laden landscape. An amazing space to bird-and-bug-watch, the Wildland's robust habitat is planted with native milkweed lending to Walgrove’s distinction as a Certified Monarch Waystation. ?? On Saturday, March 29, 3–5 PM, join us for the opening of From Coast to Crest! A new art exhibition featuring Alexander Vidal's studies of the wildlife across Los Angeles in ink and paint. For our 2025 Native Plant Garden Tour, Alexander illustrates the unique topography of Los Angeles and the breadth of flora and fauna in our own backyards. This visual reminds us of our power as native plant gardeners to create a patchwork of habitat all over the region. The artwork—notably absent of the asphalt arteries that fragment and dissect the land—reminds us of the once-contiguous habitat that our gardens seek to reclaim. Originally from New Mexico, Alexander Vidal studied cultural anthropology, and spent time living in Africa and Asia before starting his career in illustration. Travel, exploration, and a love for animals and wild spaces continue to drive the themes of his work. He is visually inspired by folk art, Midcentury design and California Modernism. A graduate of ArtCenter College of Design, his clients have included the California Academy of Sciences, Monterey Bay Aquarium, The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, Chronicle Books, Swatch, and Audubon. ???
