“So, in Goodmark’s view, if more arrests and prosecutions won’t help, what could? Money, for a start. The inverse correlation between income and rates of domestic violence is strong and undeniable. She endorses direct cash transfers to victims of abuse, pointing to studies in Ecuador and Peru showing that such transactions resulted in decreased rates of intimate-partner violence. She also recommends policies that would make housing more attainable for those with low incomes, poor credit scores, and little in savings.” We have seen through our own program, the Survivor Fund, and our other initiatives that survivors of gender-based violence can improve their situation if they are given financial assistance. Survivors know what they need to improve their well-being, which is why it’s important to create programs with low barriers and allow survivors to make their own choices. This panel discussion with pioneering young activists highlights the work being done in three states to change policies, uplift marginalized survivor communities, and cultivate networks of support among young survivors. When we fail to remove firearms from the hands of abusers, we fail to keep survivors of domestic violence safe. Revoking a FOID card is not enough to support a survivor's safety. Karina’s Law strengthens firearm removal enforcement when a survivor receives certain orders of protection, which is often one of the most dangerous times for a survivor escaping abuse. We are committed to leading the efforts in implementing Karina’s Law and educating our community of the new procedure once it goes into effect on May 11th, 2025. Our closing ceremony will feature a musical performance by Ochin Pakhi! Ochin Pakhi is made up of American, Indian, and Bangladeshi performers, of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. Each of the nine incredible performers is dedicated to making the performances dynamic, beautiful, and meaningful. Through weekly practice and meal-sharing, the performers have become a family. Audiences are often invited into that experience through song and dance, and the philosophy of the lyrics helps to build a rapport of community between musicians and the audience. The name of the band is derived from a Bengali phrase "Ochin Pakhi" (???? ????) that translates to "The unknown bird" and refers to our heart. This phrase was first used by Lalon Fakir (Shah), a prominent Bengali philosopher, Baul saint, mystic, songwriter, social reformer and thinker, in one of his famous songs “Khachar Bhitor Ochin Pakhi” (?????? ???? ???? ????). Working with domestic violence survivors can be triggering and often leaves you feeling overwhelmed, tired, angry, or helpless. Domestic violence is a sensitive topic that affects millions of people directly and indirectly. The goal of our presentation is to educate the attendees on domestic violence, vicarious trauma, and ways to help both survivors and professionals heal. We want to be able to provide the most accurate information on the topics we will be discussing; therefore, we will be incorporating statistics and information from our Mujeres Latinas en Acción website, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), and Psychology Today. Our hope is that our presentation can help you leave feeling more knowledgeable about domestic violence and vicarious trauma while also having learned ways in which they can take care of themselves to continue helping those they work with and care for.
