Megan Bingham-Walker, CEO and Founder of Anansi is revolutionising the way e-commerce businesses manage and mitigate risks. ?? Megan discovered the insurance industry as a result of her passion for data science. She was quickly hooked on the transformative nature of insurance as the bedrock for the smooth functioning of all industries. Day in and day out, Megan had spoken to retailers and fulfilment centres who were frustrated that they rarely get any sufficient compensation when items are lost or damaged in transit. On many occasions, the hours it took to process claims meant that they didn’t bother trying. Anansi brings accountability and full coverage to the value chain. They take out the uncertainty of the process, slash the admin expense and through the data start to identify fraud and areas of poor performance. Like any start up, building her business has come with its barriers: ?? - Finding insurance capacity for her idea. - Finding funding in advance? - Finding novel distribution routes. Despite the challenges, Anansi continues to thrive. Today, the spotlight is on Kate Terry, Co-Founder and CEO of Surround Insurance. ? After her first year of business school, she was interviewing for summer internships. Progressive in Cleveland had an open interview slot at the time. Not only was she fascinated by the combination of data and human psychology, but it was also the first time she thought of insurance as a force for fairness in the world. Once she'd finished her summer internship with Progressive, she was hooked by insurance and hasn't looked back since. ?????? Respect for human dignity and fairness are two of Kate's lifelong values. She disliked how the industry spoke about younger and less experienced adults. So, she took the opportunity to build a great business with her Co-Founder, Jay, by treating her employees and customers with profound respect, combining technology and warm human connection in an economically advantageous way. Building great businesses will always come with its barriers, and Kate has had to face and overcome many, including: ?? Fear. The fear of asking for what she needed and of speaking very directly. Kate also explained that she has seen more sexism in the startup world than she had ever seen in corporate. The hard times didn't stop her. Introducing Margeaux Giles, CEO of IRYS Insurtech and Insurtech Woman CEO of the Year ?? Along with being the CEO of IRYS Cloud, a Tampa-based insurtech SaaS company, she is also: - A founding member of InsureWomen and InsureEquality - Chair of the Central Florida Chapter of the Association of Professional Insurance Women - A member of the UCONN Fintech Masters Program Advisory Board. It isn’t surprising that Margeaux is so successful. Growing up, if someone told her something was impossible, that was the quickest way to get her to do it. ?? As a child, she would fix broken gadgets, bike miles just to bake a cake, and bury herself in books to crack a tricky problem. Like many of the other founders in Momentum, she didn’t find insurance, insurance found her. The idea for IRYS came out of sheer frustration when realising she didn’t own the data from her own agency. That didn’t sit right with her, so she did what she does best and fixed it for herself and the whole industry. That’s not to say that her journey didn’t come with its barriers, like: ?? - Trying to convince the industry of her new ideas. - Making every penny count when financing the business and convincing others there was a future for insurtech in a hard market. - Switching from financial services to tech (two very different industries). But she managed to overcome them, and now IRYS Cloud has been recognised as one of the top 10 insurance companies to watch by Insurance Business America. ??
