Grateful to have shared the stage with three brilliant minds discussing, Timeless Luxury: Balancing Heritage and Modernity.?Massimiliano Righi, Niccolo Doni, Loris Spadaccini We discussed American’s relationship with luxury. Observing, it differs from Europe, where luxury is a concept that is more well understood and more integrated into people’s lives.?We discussed the challenges of translating Italian luxury brands and their often Italy-based plans into this very different American landscape. We discussed brand heritage.?How it can act as a guide in uncertain times, “We’re able to look to the history and set of values that have carried the company forward and apply that to the current moment.”?Having a year like “1735” or “1878” brings credibility and a sense that, “We are experts at this.”?Brand heritage can also bring an invaluable timelessness to the brand experience. For Venchi this means NYC cafes that transport us to Milan at the turn of the century, as a contradiction to the cold modernism of an American upstart. Niccolo Doni challenged, “We must be careful our heritage doesn’t become handcuffs that forbids our own evolution.?In fact, we must recognize that in 20 years what we’re doing today might be part of the brand’s heritage.” Massimiliano Righi agreed, it must be played carefully, observing there is a difference between ancient and old.?“Old is dull. Ancient is evocative and timeless.”?We saw how Ginori 1735 is reinventing and remixing their archive.?Entirely ancient and modern at the same time. Beautifully shooting film of the original factory in an entirely modern way navigated by actor, Jake Gyllenhaal. We discussed, Save The Duck as a very modern example of, “conscientiousness luxury”.? Popular throughout Asia, the South China Morning Post calling it, “The vegan alternative to Moncler”.?As a live experiment related to, balancing heritage and modernity, Loris Spadaccini posed the question to the audience, “Should Save The Duck be positioned as a global brand or an Italian brand?”?Some thought adding Italian gave the brand instant heritage and design credibility.?While others felt Save the Duck was a big global concept that loses something in an Italian localization. Finally, we discussed how luxury brands can respond as Gen Z enters the space; adding modernity while avoiding becoming fashion.?How heritage and authenticity are our guides on this path.?We discussed the fact that chocolate benefits from modern technology while gelato does not.? And we discussed Tiffany & Co. rather awkward Blue Box Cafe as an attempt to create a heritage that doesn’t really exist.
