I stirred up some good trouble today while speaking on the Youth Education Panel at Changemakers 2025: Lancaster Businesses Collaborating for Good, hosted by Water Street Mission. I had the privilege of joining fellow panelists Mark Simms (La Academia Partnership Charter School), Emily Abbruzzese (Attollo Prep), and Marisol Santos (The Mix) in a conversation moderated by Rachel Odrosky (Lancaster Recreation Commission) on how we can better equip the next generation for success. We all agreed: Representation saves lives; seeing leaders who reflect their own experiences helps young people envision brighter futures for themselves. Key insights I shared today: ??Brown V Board caused the dismissal, demotion, or forced resignation of many experienced, highly credentialed Black educators who staffed Black-only schools decimating the black educator pipeline. In the 70 years since The US hasn't recovered from the lack of representation in schools. In 40% of all public schools, there are no teachers of color. ?? Lack of representation for students of color in the classroom leads to the achievement gap, higher suspension rates, and the school to prison nexus. ?? Black students who have just one black teacher in k-3 are 13% more likely to graduate from high school and 19% more likely to go to college. If they have two, they are 32% more likely to go to college. ?? Our students flourish through project based learning paired with real world applications. Hands on & Minds on learning! ?? Local businesses can enhance career readiness programs through facility tours, curriculum support, internships, and contributions via the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC).
