A recent study by the Association of Water Technologies (AWT), titled “Legionella in Municipal Source Water: Potential Risks for Buildings,” features insights from Metro Group’s Technical Director and AWT President, John Caloritis, CWT.?The research underscores the serious risks of Legionella pneumophila in municipal water systems, emphasizing the critical importance of implementing effective water management plans to safeguard public health. Key findings include: -?Legionella was found in 5.1% of point-of-entry samples. -?Low chlorine levels and suboptimal temperatures create risks for Legionella growth. -?14% of samples exceeded EPA water quality standards. The key changes include stricter disinfectant levels, frequent water testing, public notifications during water disruptions, and mandatory water management plans for healthcare centers, large buildings, and facilities with aerosol systems like #CoolingTowers. Non-compliance could lead to penalties up to $10,000. Property owners and operators must act by the August 2025 deadline.
