We are delighted to welcome Nikia Washington, our first Director of Engagement & Communications! The new role is intended to transform the Fund’s communications and support for grant partner organizations. We created this senior position as a direct response to grant partners’ request that we elevate our relationship-forward grant partner support and advocacy for rest for non-profit leaders. From Kate Levin Markel, McGregor Fund President: “This position marks a new chapter for us. It will bring greater accountability and partner participation to our work, while offering partners a bigger platform for theirs, and the support of additional, essential skills among our team. Kia brings those skills and so much more. We are thrilled to welcome her as a colleague, to introduce her to all our partners, and to support her as she creates this new, experimental role.” A highly regarded and innovative leader in philanthropy in Detroit and beyond, Nikia is already well known to many of you. In her current role as Director of Member Engagement for the Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF), Nikia has supported CMF members’ network- and relationship-building efforts. We are excited to welcome Nikia in January, and we look forward to working with her to elevate our partnerships and advance our work. Learn more about Nikia here: https://lnkd.in/e_MWzrJE

关于我们
Grounded in the lived examples of Tracy and Katherine McGregor, the McGregor Fund works to support and strengthen a safety net of essential resources and opportunities for vulnerable members of our community, particularly those experiencing sustained and concentrated poverty. We believe all human beings deserve access to these essential resources and opportunities, without which a healthy, fulfilled life is impossible. People living in poverty differ only insomuch as they are unable to pay for them. Working within the tri-county region of Metropolitan Detroit, we optimize our investments of grants and staff time to strengthen the safety net of essential resources for people in need.

From Nonprofit Quarterly: "Particularly for BIPOC women and gender-expansive people, sustaining leadership is about more than professional identity and capacity. It is about ensuring that they are aligned with their own spirit and values—that they are practicing trusting their intuition and integrating their insights in ways that activate their leadership." https://lnkd.in/gt63kMag

What we're reading. #DVAM2024 #MCEDSV #grantpartner
A few weeks ago, I asked my team to share their “Why” stories with me. Why do they do this work? Where have they come from? The entry below is one of the responses. It’s long, especially for the aggressively get-to-the-point culture of social media. It also includes some triggering language. ? I’ve created several highly abbreviated versions. Choosing the most impactful and colorful language. Sanitizing some of the scary and sad parts. Making it easier for you to take a quick bite and move along. But every time I look at those consumerized versions, it’s not my colleague staring back. It’s me. And this is not my story to tell. So, I'm giving it to you as it was given to me. ? A lot of folks have clicked along to the next post on their feed already, and that’s ok. If you’re still here, I invite you to stay for a couple minutes longer and share in the journey. I think you will be moved by it. I have been.?

From Kate Levin Markel, McGregor Fund President: "Robert has been a friend and mentor to so many of us – folks leading the work as well as his funder peers – which makes it a special honor to be named Black Executive Director Alliance of Detroit (BEDAD)’s Robert Thornton Philanthropic Partner for 2024. Thank you to BEDAD’s board, team, and members for everything you do, day in and day out! We’re inspired to answer to your collective example."
The Black Executive Directors Alliance of Detroit, better known as BEDAD, announced the Inaugural Executive Leadership Awards at its membership dinner last week. These awards serve 2 purposes: 1) To recognize critical actors in our community (BEDAD members, philanthropy, and systems, like schools, city, etc) who exemplify BEDAD's 5 values of commitment, responsibility, trustworthiness, integrity, and leadership and are champions to and partners with, the Black Executive Leadership community of Detroit. 2) We are blessed in this work to stand on the shoulders of the giants who preceded us. These awards were named after people who made things better for us in 2024 because of their work and the trails the cleared for today's executive leader. Charles Small, Annie Ellington, and Robert Thornton are people we should all remember, lift up, and understand the roles they played in our professional lives. Congrats to: Kimberly Johnson, Founder/CEO of Developing KIDS who received the Charles Small Executive of the Year award; Shuna K. Hayward, Vice President of Programs at Connect Detroit received the System Partner of the Year award; McGregor Fund was awarded the Robert Thornton Philanthropic Partner of the Year award. Congrats to all the winners for carrying the mantle of leadership for current and aspiring executive leaders across Metro Detroit, now, and into the future. Now let's go make it happen! #detroit #wearebedad #biggerthanme #Leadership #executiveleadershipsummit24
