We've said it before, and it's worth saying again — volunteers make our world go 'round. We've had a number of amazing volunteer groups in Thelma's Kitchen over the past several weeks, and we want to shout them out! Thanks to VML, St. Paul's UMC, Church of the Resurrection Leawood, and Flourish - A Furniture Bank for each sending some of their crew to help in the Kitchen recently! Currently we have the most volunteer opportunities available in Thelma's Kitchen, but we've also begun having volunteers help the REVEAL case management team and assist with Foster Grandparents! Interested in getting involved? Email [email protected] to learn more.?

One of the central components of Thelma's Kitchen is our dream to turn dividing lines — like Troost Ave. historically has been — into gathering places. That's why we have two long community tables in our cafe — they're big enough to seat multiple groups in one shared space, ideally groups from all walks of life and worldviews. When we sit with people who are different than us, do you know what happens? Community building. Mutual understanding. Meaningful conversations. Come into the cafe and experience it for yourself — and get some top notch food while you're at it!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who joined us for the Hike for Reconciliation on Saturday — it was a day of thoughtful reflection, great food, and community building. On top of it all, we raised $46,000 to go toward supporting our neighbors with critical services like case management and trauma therapy.

We will never forget this night of gourmet food made with ugly produce, and our community coming together to raise nearly $30,000 to fight against hunger in our city. Huge thank you to everyone who attended, to our brilliant Chef Natasha Bailey for the unbelievable menu, to Beam Suntory for impeccable cocktails, to our volunteers who were integral in making the night run smoothly, and of course our partners and friends at Kanbe's Markets who made this event happen. We already can't wait to do this again!

We had the BEST time hosting an Ugly Dinner with our partners and friends at Kanbe's Markets earlier this week!
Last night, we hosted our #HungerActionMonth Ugly Dinner at Thelma's Kitchen, where we were able to spotlight the immense talents of Chef Natasha Bailey and recognize the incredible work done at Reconciliation Services. The five-course dinner featured “ugly” produce presented beautifully, and helped us raise nearly $30,000 to take meaningful action against food insecurity in Kansas City. Special thanks to Mayor Quinton Lucas for joining us!
